TOPIC: ISSUE13 - "Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct."
WORDS: 643         TIME: 00:45:00 + 25         DATE: 2007-7-26 16:01:59

There is a fact that many lesser-known languages are being lost since fewer and fewer people speak them in the world. Should the governments of countries in which these languages are spoken act to prevent such languages from dying out? I concede that some lesser-known languages without which some treasure would lose should be protected from extinction, while in many cases, the extinction of the languages which impede the communication and without much value is good for us. In addition, it is the governments who should take actions to protect the former ones.

To begin with, the lesser-known languages through which can we know the historical heritages from our ancestry are required to be protected. If these languages become extinct, we would lose our only accesses to the culture and knowledge in history. For instance, there are only a few old people and some scholars who are able to understand the ancient Chinese which is abstract and mainly used 200 years ago. However, the Chinese had created many precious literature works in such language which contain almost every aspects of knowledge in the past including arts, medicine, military affairs, politics, agriculture and so forth. To inherit the heritages of their ancestors, many Chinese universities open such a course to keep the ancient Chinese passing from generation to generation. For another example, the Sanskrit is an ancient Indian language which few speak nowadays. However, many important Buddhist sutras were written in this language and there are only about one thousand persons understand it all around the world. Unless well-protected, we may lose this language and meanwhile lose much important treasure in Buddhism. Therefore, such languages which are the keys to the ancient heritages should be prevented from extinction.

However, not all the lesser-known language should be protected from dying out.  There are many dialects that are spoken by only a few people and used in a small range. To learn such languages to communicate with the minority is not wise. For instance, in Jiangsu province of China, there are a number of dialects and even in some remote town of a population of only several hundred persons there may be several dialects because each village has its own language. One needs to learn a dialect to talk with the people in a village and to learn another to speak to the people in another village. When one goes to another town, he has to learn several new dialects again. To communicate with only several hundred people in such province is so exhausted and it is a torture to learn so many dialects. Hence, these dialects actually impede the communication among people. We should let it die out and use a uniform language to better communicating.

In addition, since governments possess the wealth and resources of the whole nations, they should take actions to prevent the valuable languages in danger from extinction, which are keys to the historical cultures and religious works. It is the government who can request the universities to open a new course for an ancient language and meanwhile provide enough money, summoning excellent scholars all around the nation, and collecting precious historical records to support this course. Moreover, the government can also make some laws to courage students to learn such lesser-known languages and prevent the historical relics from destroying, which have the language on them. Yet, no single citizen or groups of people can possess such power and wealth. Thus, the government should make efforts to protecting the valuable dying out languages because it has the resource and capacity.

In sum, whether we should prevent the dying out languages from extinction depends on the value of the languages. Those lesser-known languages which are accesses to the ancient heritage should be protected while we should let those become extinct which impede the communication and without much value. In addition, the government should be responsible for the protecting of a language in danger.

There is a fact that manylesser-known languages are being lost since fewer and fewer peoplespeak them in the world. I concede that some lesser-known languages without which sometreasure would lose should be protected from extinction, while in manycases, the extinction of the languages which impede the communicationand without much value is good for us.

To begin with, the lesser-known languages throughwhich can we know the historical heritages from our ancestry arerequired to be protected. If these languages become extinct, we wouldlose our only accesses to the culture and knowledge in history. Forinstance, there are only a few old people and some scholars who areable to understand the ancient Chinese which is abstract and mainlyused 200 years ago. However, the Chinese had created many preciousliterature works in such language which contain almost every aspects ofknowledge in the past including arts, medicine, military affairs, politics, agriculture and so forth. To inheritthe heritages of their ancestors, many Chinese universities open such acourse to keep the ancient Chinese passing from generation togeneration. For another example, the Sanskrit is an ancient Indianlanguage which few speak nowadays. However, many important Buddhistsutras were written in this language and there are only about onethousand persons understand it all around the world. Unlesswell-protected, we may lose this language and meanwhile lose muchimportant treasure in Buddhism. Therefore, such languages which are thekeys to the ancient heritages should be prevented from extinction.

However, not all thelesser-known language should be protected from dying out.  There aremany dialects that are spoken by only a few people and used in a smallrange. To learn such languages to communicate with the minority is notwise. For instance, in Jiangsu province of China, there are a number ofdialects and even in some remote town of a population of only severalhundred persons there may be several dialects because each village hasits own language. One needs to learn a dialect to talk with the peoplein a village and to learn another to speak to the people in anothervillage. When one goes to another town, he has to learn several newdialects again. To communicate with only several hundred people in suchprovince is so exhausted(exhausting) and it is a torture to learn so many dialects.Hence, these dialects actually impede the communication among people.We should let it die out and use a uniform language to bettercommunicating(communicate better).

In addition, sincegovernments possess the wealth and resources of the whole nations, theyshould take actions to prevent the valuable languages in danger fromextinction, which are keys to the historical cultures and religiousworks. It is the government who(that) can request the universities to open anew course for an ancient language and meanwhile provide enough money,summoning(这个词稍微有点不妥) excellent scholars all around the nation, and collectingprecious historical records to support this course. Moreover, thegovernment can also make some laws to courage students to learn suchlesser-known languages and prevent the historical relics fromdestroying, which have the language on them. Yet, no single citizen orgroups of people can possess such power and wealth. Thus, thegovernment should make efforts to protecting the valuable dying outlanguages because it has the resource and capacity.

In sum, whether weshould prevent the dying out languages from extinction depends on thevalue of the languages. Those lesser-known languages which are accessesto the ancient heritage should be protected while we should let thosebecome extinct which impede the communication and without much value.In addition, the government should be responsible for the protecting ofa language in danger.
