50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
Should all faculty spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach? And is it the only way to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level? The speaker claims so. I concede that it indeed benefits a lot to make some college faulty work outside but related to their academic fields. Othervise, in my view the measure primarily depends on the different academic areas moreover it is not the only way for us to improve the education quality.

Admittedly, in the applied academic fields close to practice such as architecture and engineering, that faculty taking part in practice does benefit in two aspects. First of all, professors would make the process of teaching more efficient and practical. In my experience as a student, we easily feel dull and antipathic about the class only full of formula and numbers and even just passively absorb the imformation provided by teacher. Things change when teachers who have worked in professions relevant to the courses they teach have their classes. They can let students actively involve in learning not only by giving a lively account but also by bringing vivid real examples instead of dry and tasteless content in textbooks. What’s more, students’ interests can be fully stimulated in the process. Secondly, after  graduating from college students would adapt the relevant work more quickly because they have attained both theoretic and practical konwledge.

When it comes to the academic fields of fundamental researches, such working experience does litte positive effect on their teaching or research. Take cosmology in theoretical physics for example. This research depends primarily on thinking as a process of posing an hypothesis, deducing it and again and again in the level of thinking. It has little to do with real life so it would be a waste of time or even restrict their thinking and influence their mode of thinking for these professors to work outside the academic world. In some way it would do harm to their teaching. Hardly can we believe if all the faculty blindly follow this measure, may progress in the theoretic field be made.

However, we still can take other measures to improve the qulityof instruction at the college and university level. Giving students more opportunities to take part in practicing, making them participate in class activiteies more actively, and letting them communicate with their teachers and classmates more often are all useful ways to reach the purpose. Certainly, it will be efficient by taking these measures together.

Should all faculty spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach? And is it the only way to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level? The speaker claims so. I concede that it indeed benefits a lot to make some college faulty work outside but 这里好像没有转折关系 related to their academic fields. Othervise, otherwise in my view the measure primarily depends on the different academic areas moreover it is not the only way for us to improve the education quality.
