In the history of development of human society, whether at before or nowadays, there are innumerous heroes whose characters or feats are appreciated by their societies. Thus some people, including the author claim that if we want to understand the character of a society, we would better examine the character of its heroes, both the men and women heroes. I concede that, to some extent, a lot of heroes who are recognized by the whole public represent the character of a society. But it does not mean that such heroes can reflect the total character of a society. Rather, there are still other ways could better be used to examine the society.

Admittedly, learning the heroes whose characters dramatically inflect the others in the society, people can know the character of the society better. For such heroes, there must be some inherent elements, such as religion belief, moral standard and pursuit of freedom, make them recognized as heroes by the public. And such virtues are just the characters which are admired and pursued in the society. For example, Martin Luther Kind and George Washington were both the heroes in the minds of American forever, because they bring the society of America to a higher stage. Their pursuit to democracy, fair and freedom undoubtedly reflect the characters of the American society. From the characters of such heroes, the characters of the society can be better learnt.

However, heroes' character cannot represent the whole characters of a society, even more, admiration to the heroes sometimes overlap the fact. Heroes always are famous because of some feats or some respects of their life, rather than their whole life, so that they cannot represent the society appropriately. For example, David Beckham is the hero of England due to his goal at the last minute of a game which brought the England football team into the world cup, Michael Jordan is the hero of Chicago, due to the five champions he and his team mates won for Chicago. They are both recognized by their great contribution in sports field, and their devotion and enthusiasm to their jobs can reflect the spirit to career in their society. But people can hardly learn the whole characters of their society by examining them, because people only concerning their feats in the aspect of sport but omit their other characters. We can learn nothing about the society from their luxury life.

Moreover, is there no other ways to study the characters of the society except examine the heroes? Definitely wrong. It is exaggerated to say that the best way is to examine the heroes of the society. A hero is just a small part of a society, whose characters are accumulated by its history of thousands of years. Without deeply researching into the historic files about the religious, arts and science, hardly can we know a society profoundly. Furthermore, the character of a society is the general character all its people share and appreciate during their daily life, people therefore must put them into the daily life of a society to examine the society better. In a word, only learning the character of heroes is far away from knowing a society. In order to learn the society better, people have to study its history and daily life.

Generally speaking, we can learn something about the society from the heroes, but we cannot pay too much attention to the characters of the heroes. Rather, we should take other ways to learn the society. The character of a society is too profound to learn only by examining the character of its heroes.

We can learn nothing about the society from their luxury life.  第一眼看了觉得本段相当不错，细看来觉得还是有点问题。难道上一个段落的英雄人们崇拜的就不是他们的某一部分了么？从你这段的例证来看更像是说我们崇拜的英雄的性格部分只是我们生活中不重要的非永恒的暂时之举～不像马丁路德同学的精神属于人类代代流传的inner spirit～不知道我这样来统领这段的例子你是否会觉得更合理？;) 本来我觉得划线句子的意思即我们之所以崇拜英雄的品质是因为我们没有这种品质即社会缺乏这种品质来驳斥作者的观念～可惜你没用:(
