TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
I partially agree with the assertion that in order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach because it benefits both teachers and students. Meanwhile, the speaker is too extreme when he says "all faculty" and in my view, it should depend on the teacher's personal situation, including the nature of his course and the time locating of his teaching work.
To begin with, from the perspective of teachers, working in professions relevant to their courses they teach have positive effects on their promoting academic ability. Many majors such as law and economy require abundant of practical experience to turn the theory in text book to one's inner recognition. When studying law, no matter how many examples the text book cites from reality, they are still indirect experience for teachers. There could be many other possible cases needing consideration which could only be met in real court as a layer. Only by meeting the real case can the teacher understand the law regulations deeper and thus teaches better. Working outside the academic world is a opportunity to increase a teacher's professional ability.
Second, from the respective of students, attending the lecture of the teacher who has working outside college helps them learn more. Take a course named Teaching Strategy and Skills in English major in Chinese for example. This course aims at teaching students who are going to be English teachers in junior or senior high school the skills of teaching. By getting a teacher who has worked in high school, students could learn more about how is real class like thus attain a practical view toward this course when the teacher tells them his or her personal experiences and other relevant matters in his or her workplace.
Though working outside does have positive effects on improving the quality of instruction, not all faculty should have another job relevant to the course they teach because of two reasons. First, the nature of the course determines that some teachers who teach fundamental courses such as mathematics and courses which needs good researching environment are not necessarily working outside. Because there are few works concerning the elementary subjects and if one wants to do research or experiment, university and college are the best choices. Additionally, the teacher's course schedule also limits the opportunity of working outside. No one can deny the fact that a teacher’s work is to teach. If he is so busy working outside that he could not balance the time and energy between outside job and his teaching task, his students would be ruined by his poor performance in class. So the teachers who have a busy teaching schedule should first do his teaching task in a satisfactory way.
Through the three points I have made above, I reach the conclusion that teachers work outside academic world in professions relevant to their courses will help improve the quality of instruction at college and university level. However, not all faculty should do that because everyone's condition is different。
