Nowadays, an increasing number of professors of the college go outside the academic world and work at the position linked to their professions. The speaker holds the assertion that it is necessary for all faculties to spend time working outside in order to improve the quality of teaching. This view seems to be right in some cases. However, I do not agree with the speaker totally. In fact, whether the professors should work outside the college depends on many factors such as the disciplines and the personal life of the professors.
On one hand, the requirement of whether a professor should have work experience varies among various disciplines. For some subjects, the academicians are required to research and study seriously even without any attention to other things. Examples of this kind are philosophy, pure mathematics and etc. For some other subjects, the professors need actual experiences relevant to their research to explain the theoretical knowledge vividly. Many disciplines that have something to do with management and economics are good examples of this kind. Even in the same field, the need of experience of teachers differs from divarication to divarication. Take mathematic for example, the pure mathematic provides no opportunities for teachers to find a job in the market, while the economical mathematic, which study the futures, stocks and so on, requires the teachers to be familiar with the market.
On the other hand, there are many cases that the experience needed during the instruction of theoretical knowledge is not the professor's. For instance, the representative cases discussed in a curriculum of laws are always dealt with by different attorneys. There is neither necessity nor possibility for the teacher of law to handle so many cases. The key point in a case of law is the uniquely critical and creative thought of laws instead of the experience as a lawyer. In addition, for a student of law, cases in different fields should be studied, while it is impossible for a professor to deal all of them.
Last but not least, the time and energy of a person is restricted, so spending much time on working in the social marked may result in decreased quantity of instruction. Being busy with personal work outside the campus and earning money will put the professor away from the favorable position.
For the reasons above I will hold the view that the working experience is not always required for the faculty of a college or university, and whether it is needed depends on many factors including different disciplines, personal conditions and so on.
50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
