TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

In the argument the author concludes that dentists who advertised to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients. However, the evidence in the argument hardly can support the argument. In my view, the author suffers from three logical flaws.

First and foremost, the author fails to convince me that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. To substantiate his claim, he cites a recent survey indicates that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. However, he did not mention the whole number of men and women who faint in the survey. Maybe men have more tooth disease than women and this makes the faint of men more frequently than women, but the whole number is less than women. Moreover, it is extremely possible that the tooth disease of men is more severe than women, so that men are more likely to faint while visiting the dentist. Without ruling out such possibilities, the author fails to convince me that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are.

Moreover, even assuming that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are, the author cannot persuade me that the advertisement that emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients can attract more male consumers, because it is highly possible that the consumers are paying more attention to the treating technology rather than the anesthetic techniques or the sensitivity of their staff. Maybe the dentist and the staff are good at anesthetic techniques and very sensitive, but bad at his treating technology. This will make the consumer unsatisfied and refused to visit the dentist.

Last but no means least, even though the advertisement can practiced in a good term and attract lots of male patients, the author overlook the point that the female patients may feel alienated and refused to hospitalize in this client. This will make the client lose its female market and cannot achieve the aim of more consumers, even less than the before.

To sum up, the author fails to substantiate his claim that dentists who advertised to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients, because the evidence in the analysis dose not lead strong support to what the author maintains. To substantiate his claim, the author should obtain the valid number of the people fainted when visiting the dentist and make more market investigation.
