Are technologies can influence even determine social customs and ethics,as the speaker asserted? I agree with insofar as to technologies can influence social customs and ethics in some degree. However,the speaker exaggerates the effect of technology,by asserting that it can determin social customs and ethics. Moreover,the claim unfairly ignores some other important factors which may also take effect.
     Admittedly,there's on doubt that technologies play a quite important part in the faormation and progress of social customs and ethics. For example,in acient times,by picking up fruits,women make much more contributions to the society than men ,who prey on anmials,and therefore women have a higher status than men. While with the development of technologies,men began to master more about making and using tools, the men achieve superiorityin social life corrispondingly. Of course,technologies can afflunce even change the state of life,which results in the change of social customs and ethics. Since Internet became a part of our life,we needn't chat face to face,instead,we can exchang our ideas through MSN or E-mail. We give up our old out-of-date notions,new customes and ethic coming into being.
     As for the assertion that technologies can determine social customs and ethics,the speaker overlooks technologies. Nowadays,technologies have had the power to change a man into a woman or a woman into a man,however,it doesn't mean that technologies can make the public change the traditional ideas and ethics about sex. Objectively,we can't dely that technologies can chang a few people in some aspcets,nevertheless,they're not strong enough to chang or determine the entire system of social customs and ethics.
     In additon,there're some other critical factors,together with technologies, influnce and determine social customs and ethics. History may afflunce people the way they see;philosophy may afflunce people the way they think; and experience may affluence people the way they act.In other words,the technology is not the only factor taking effect.
     Through what have been discussed above,we could draw a conclusion that technologies can influnce but can't determine social customs and ethics. Actually,everything involved in the society,whether its formation,its progress or its extrinction,results from so many factors functioning,without excepions.
