TOPIC: ARGUMENT48 - The following appeared in a newspaper article published in the country of Corpora.

"Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness. Today, the board says that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit and suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason. But since overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest, it is clear that using computers has not made citizens less physically fit. Instead, as shown by this year's unusually low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and fitness levels will improve when the economy does."

By simply considering several facts in the country of Corpora, the arguer arrives at the conclusion that the fitness levels' decline is relevant to the low expenditures on fitness-related products but not the long time using computer. Ostensibly plausible the argument seems to be, it still suffer several flaws as discussed follows.

First of all, whether the standards for adequate physical fitness are increase kept unknown. When the economics of Corpora is keeping a stable increase, the standards of people's daily lives are increase at the same time, which might lead to the increase of the standards for adequate physical fitness. If it is the case, the fitness level in Corpora actually does not ebb, even it is declaimed that ebbed.

In the second place, even assuming that the fitness level in Corpora is actually decrease, the arguer simply equate the ownership of computer to the long time using of computer, which is an another logical error. Give an exact instance, one school, which educates students with computers, certainly have a great amount of computers. However, the time period, during which the students use the computers, is far less than that of those who has personal computer in home. Take it extremely, for a factory, it might has many computers, which control the produce line and need no one to type before the screen, in which case the factory has a relative high computer ownership but no one is really using them.

Finally, the arguer fails to establish a causal relationship between the low expenditures on fitness-related products and the low fitness level. To keep a high fitness level has to do with one's eating habit and the attitude to exercise, rather than whether he/she goes to buy fitness-related products. There are far more methods to keep in a good health, such as mountain hiking, running, walking, taking exercise in the garden, few of which needs too much money, if any. Even granted that there is some relationship between fitness level and the expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the arguer still can not make me convince that the fitness levels will improve when the economy rises, since the arguer does not rule out such possibilities as people have other things more necessary to be invested or citizens in Corpora are all too busy to take a great deal of time to buy those products or enjoy those services.

All in all, the argument based on too many ungrounded evidences which make its logical vulnerable to doubt. To clear the relationship among fitness level and real factors effecting them, more scientific survey should be carried out.

argument 48
Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness.

In this argument, the author claims that the reasons of declined level of physical fitness of all citizens in Corpora is not  the increasing amount of time used on computers ,but  the depress of economy. To support the claim, the author cites a high ratio of computer ownership has certain relationship to the fitness , also offers a fact about recent decline in the economy. However, the argument suffers from several critical fallacies and is therefore unpersuasive.

First of all, the comparasion between 20 years ago and now based on the assumption that the standard of fitness is unchanged. As we all known, the fitness level , as the development of the technology and science, is increasing recently. Now maybe more aspects of body being checked which are unable to detect 20 years ago, because of the more aquairment upon the fitness, the protion of the health will decrease reasonalbly and admittedly. Since the author dose not offer the evidence that the fitness standard remains the same,  the conclusion that the more people are unfitness today is unwarranted.

Moreover, even if the fitness standard keeps identical all the time, the author fails to indicate that using computer is not the reason of the declined fitness ratio. Although the the highest fitness levels region is where people own the most computers, it is unclear to illustrate using computers would not destroy the fitness of people. It is entirely possible that most of all the owers do not often play computer ,or at least spend less time on it. Perhaps the people in this region have advanced concept of the health and insist doing exercises everyday, or perhaps there are less work stress on people. Since the author provide no evidence to rule out these possilbilities , I cannot be conceived by the argument.

Additionally, the low purchase of fitness-related products and services in this is may not the result of the declined economy. If the ratio of the owers of products and servise has to  be a certain high level, the increasing of purchase will be unclear. Perhaps those who want to buy products and services have already bought last year, thus less people need to do the purchase this year. It is also possible that the satisfication about the produces and services recently is special disappointed, so tremendous amount of people choose to do exercises by onesely, instead of to the spa. Without the evidence to declude these situations, the conclusion is dubious at best.

In sum, the conclusion is ill conveiced and poorly supported. To strenghthen it , the author must offer evdience that the standard of fitness remains the same, and highest levels of ownership are relataded to the highest use upon computer. To better assess it, it would be useful to clarity no other factors, besides the declined economy, can cause the result of  the less purchase of fitness produce and services.
