题目:ARGUMENT48 - The following appeared in a newspaper article published in the country of Corpora.

"Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness. Today, the board says that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit and suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason. But since overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest, it is clear that using computers has not made citizens less physically fit. Instead, as shown by this year's unusually low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and fitness levels will improve when the economy does."

In this editorial, the author claims the dissent from the suggestion of the national advisory board that spending too much time using computers may be the reason for the decrease of the citizen's physical fitness in Corpora. To verify the claim, the arguer provides the evidence that in the regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are highest overall fitness levels are also highest. Instead, the arguer tries to convince us the decline in the economy which may lead to low expenditures on fitness-related products and services is most likely the cause, and with the improving of the economy the fitness levels will also does. This argument suffers from several critical flaws.

First of all, the assumption that higher ownership of the computer equals to a more time using upon which the conclusion depends is unwarranted.  Not all the owner of computer uses their computer quite frequently. Common sense tells us, the computers owned for the using of family are not usually used; only those fallacies in companies have to spend a lot of time on computers for work. Therefore, perhaps using computer very much time is not the case although given the highest ownership in those regions.

Secondly, the author has not taken other factors except the low expenditures on fitness-related products and services into account which may weaken the convincing of the claim. Fitness-related products and services are not essential for the improving of the physical fitness. For example, running or riding a bicycle is also approach to keep physical fitness in a great level. Meanwhile, it is also possible that some public faculties are available for sports which may balance the influence of the low expenditures on fitness-related products and services.  Without ruling out the possibilities above, the conclusion that citizens have not pay enough money to keep physical fitness is reckless.

Thirdly, even granted that the low expenditures on fitness-related produces and services should be responsible for the decrease of the physical fitness of the citizens, we have not been persuaded that the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and if the economy improves will also does the fitness levels. The low expenditures on fitness-related produces and services are not necessary caused by the decline of economy. Some other factors may also be considered. Perhaps, in recent years the citizens do not pay much attention to the physical fitness, and therefore neglect the investment of it. Additional, even if the fact that less money spent on keeping physical fitness is due to the decline of economy, the improving of the economy is unsure to guarantee an increase in the sell of fitness-related products and services. Maybe the citizens prefer to spend extra money in the other fields.

To sum up, the author should provide more information to prove that in regions of the highest level of computer ownership, the fact that too much time is spent using computers also exists. Meanwhile, other factors except low expenditures on fitness-related products and services which could be the alternative reasons of physical fitness decrease should also be considered. Additional, only if the causal relationship between the decline in economy and the phenomenon that less money is spent on keeping physical fitness is established, will this argument more reasonable.
