Nowadays, the major cities are not only the center of economic, but also that of culture. Thus some one, including the author, claims that the best way to understand the most significant characteristics of a society is studying its major cities. I concede that learning the major cities of a society is a short way to understand its characteristics, yet solely learning major cities is not enough for the one who want thoroughly understand a society, because the small cities and the little countries can embody the characteristics better.

Admittedly, it is more convenient to learn the society in the major cities, due to where different characteristics of the society aggregate. In the history of a society, most of the major cities play important roles for the development of the society's culture. For example, Roma, Beijing and London, they are all the source place of the respective societies' culture. Moreover, the major cities have become the economical center of different societies nowadays. The considerable situation of economy attracts all people in that society, so that there are always different of characteristics of the society in the major city. One can learn, therefore, both the developing history of the society's characteristics and the different characteristics of the whole society in the major city. It is really helpful for one to learn the society.

However, we must notice that one can not learn deeply the characteristics of a society in the major cities. Due to the mutual affection among different culture in the major cities, no one characteristic of the society can maintain its originality. The process of globalization further makes the major cities lost their own characters. As a result, we can see all people would like to eat hamburger and drink Cola at any major cities of any society. Additionally, the pressure of life usually is another burden which makes the original characteristics of the society metamorphoses. In a word, the economic pressure and the influence of different culture make people cannot learn the truly characteristics of a society in the major cities.

On the contrary, the cities of small scale and even the little countries restore the original characteristic of a society. In such places, people can enjoy their free life without tremendous pressure of economy and competition, furthermore, there is rarely influence of exterior culture. Thus although one cannot learn the comprehensive characteristics of a society, he or she can the most original and truest characteristics of society.

Generally speaking, one can know what the most important characteristics in a society are by studying its major cities, but it is impossible to understand such characteristics thoroughly by studying such cities. In order to understand such characteristics better, one should pay attention to the small cities and other little countries of the society.
