如果主语是a star，depending on mass搭配不妥，逻辑上不通顺，因为整个句子表达的意思是行星在经历了红巨星的阶段之后，变成白矮星，中子星或者黑洞，是由行星本身的质量决定的。单纯的depending on mass不能表达这个意思。

而直接由mass of a star做主语，不能直接和pass搭配，因为pass的施事者是a star。

所以D最为妥当。
