ISSUE59 " Too much emphasis is placed on role models. Instead of copying others, people should learn to think and act independently and thus make the choices that are best for them."
[Outline]:采用平衡观点
1.role models能激励我们进步
2.独立思考的重要性
3.一味模仿会导致失败
4.role models与独立思考两者相辅相成
The issue posed above reveals far more intricate nature beyong the fact that people should either follow the models: the paradoxical contradiction between individual characteristics and following role models virtually exist in universal issues. To this sense, I would like to defend both side on a balanced view, rather than unilaterally support or dissent the speaker's sheer emphasize on the individual aspect.
On the one side, learning about honorable accomplishments from the role models offers us inspiration to pursue further achievements. For example, an entrepreneur inspired by the courage and tenacity of history's great president Roosevelt Franklin Delano, who assumed presidency at the depth of the Great Depression and World War II, might decide as a result to solve the enduring problems in his or her own company. Even for those ordinary people who rarely have the opportunity to deal with such a mess, learning from courage of role models in the face of adversity can provide motivation to face their own personal fears in life. In short, inspired by the spirit of grand achievements of role models can enable us to get through the everyday business of living, whatever that business might be, by emboldening us and lifting our spirits.
On the other side, in many fields of human endeavor, independent thinking and even some seemingly idyosyncratic actions are crucial, especially concerning the art. When Franz Liszt (hungarian pianist)asked Beethoven how to listen to the opinions of the critics, Beethoven replied (and I paraphrase):"it is no use listening to the masses about what your music should be; clearly, if I followed all their preferences and cater for their tastes, I will not be the man today, but a faked duplicate of the former musicians." Obviously, if such a talented artist too humbly submit himself to the opinions of the people or to only coyping those famous models, the consequence will be of his undoing. Thus, the benefit of independent thinking and analysis is revealed.
For the same reason, scientists who blindly follow the creed of the former authorities or established theories will fail to succeed. Ptolemy was a votary of Aristotle's theory that objects of different weight fall with different velocity. His blind faith with the unwarranted theory compromised his fame in the history of science when Galileo threw two different balls from Pisa Tower and toppled the foundation of Aristotle's conclusion. In short, copying others without careful examination and reasoning with skepticism not only undermines the scientists' fames but also deprive them of the chances of important discoveries.
So what about the relation between our independence as well as creativity and these epitomes as well as models? They damage our originality and independence? No since they, as stated above, have their rationality of existence. Creativity and independence mean that we can work out things better and new than ever or presently, but it is not to say rejection and exclusion to the models. On the contrary, we need more and better models to make us advance at less cost to time and energy. Through the comparison with models, comprehensive and analysis, we know why we lag below, our work efficiency is so weak and above all we understand where we scratch below under the ground. Then, we combine these to our own ideas to formulate a brand-new one --which in another word, represent the ability of creativity and independent thinking.
In conclusion, I hope I have demonstrated my balanced-view of both independent thinking and conformity to the standards: They are both significant and essential to our human beings. In fact, over-emphasis of either is even worse than following one of these two, and we should strike a balance between them. |
