Does the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives? The speaker asserts so. In my observation, while study the history which is relevant to our daily lives is worthy, learning from great figures and experiences of great events in history are also beneficial.

Admittedly, learning the history of customs, mores and so forth can make our lives more meaningful. Through the evolution of the festivals we can know that when we are celebrating festivals, we are enjoying a culture. An example illustrating this point involves the Spring Festival, the Chinese New Year, which is the most important holiday of Chinese all around the world, especially to those in China. For hundreds of years, all Chinese go home for a reunion dinner with families on the New Year eve and the next day they wish good luck to each other. In the ancient time, since the traffic was pool people even travel for months to arrive at home before the new year eve. Even during the Second World War, the Chinese on the one hand fought against the Japanese and on the other hand never stopped celebrating this festival. Now in the information age when the online video phone and email are prevailing, the Chinese still go home at the days before the Spring Festival, leading to the largest human migration every year in China. This festival expresses that the notion of family is core unit in Chinese culture and Chinese always hold good wishes to others. Therefore, through the history of some customs, we can know more about our culture.

However, the spirit of the key figures in history which are though not directly related to daily lives can also inspire us. Studying the great explorers in history, the students would be instigated by their spirits. For example, inspired by Magellan, the person who first made a global travel around the world, some students may decide to devote the great careers such as exploring the outer space, detecting oil in the oceans and so forth. Moreover, the determination and courage of Magellan also inspire us not to fear the difficulties we encounter in our lives but to overcome them. In short, study the great individuals in history can inspire us to attain great achievements and overcome difficulties in our lives.

Besides the spirit of the famous individuals in history, the historical experiences benefit us a lot. When we meet some problems now, we can always learn something from the past. The Asian financial storm is a case in point. When this economic disaster damages the economy of many Asian countries and has detrimental effect on other countries which has economic cooperation with these Asian countries. The USA has much economic cooperation with Asian countries, but the financial storm did not affect its economy much since it has an advanced Macro-control on economy. However, this mechanism of Macro-control was developed based on the experiences from handling the economic depression in USA during the 1920s. Thus, the past experiences can guide us to solve modern problems.

In sum, although study the history related to our daily lives can make our lives with significant meaning, the great individuals in history can inspire us to pursue great jobs and the past experiences of dealing problems can guide us lot to handle modern problems. In final analysis, study of history can benefit us a great deal.
