ISSUE147 "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
The speaker asserts that we have to choose one between tradition and modernization because of their incompatibility. I agree with the statement insofar as there are difference between tradition and modernization, and they may result in conflict in some circumstance when work together. However I disagree with the statement we can only choose one between them since they are mutually exclusive. The speaker may overlook some connections between tradition and modernization.
Admittedly, in some area, tradition and modernization cannot be used both. Consider the example of Chinese characters, we know there are two kinds of characters, one is simplified character and another is traditional character. The former is derived from the latter by simplifying the structure to make it writing easier and convenient, same as the relationship of all the other tradition and modernization—the modernization is an extension of tradition. But using the simplified character and traditional character together will definitely cause confusion, especially in computer application because the two kinds of characters cannot be processed appropriately since they use completely different character set. In this case, we have to pick up one from the tradition and modernization as the speaker claimed.
However, in most areas, tradition and modernization can work side by side and carry effective, colorful and harmonious consequence. Examples from architecture and clothes serve to illustrate this point.
People who have been Xi'an of China will surely be deeply attracted by the City Wall, which was built thousands years ago. Standing on the City Wall, while astonished by the great work of ancient people, we can also find all kinds of modern buildings around it. In other cities with long history, it has always been a hot topic to build the modern buildings while preserving the historical buildings. The styles of new buildings are required not undermine the aesthetic value of historical buildings. Though meet some difficulties, a considerate design in both architecture and aesthetic can solve the problem perfectly. The traditional buildings embraced by the modern buildings remind the tourists that here was once another vision centuries ago. Modern and tradition reach a dear balance here.
Do you remember the scenario of APPEC in Shanghai several years ago, the leaders from all member countries wearing the traditional clothes of Chinese Tang dynasty smiled and weave hands before hundreds of reporters and their cameras, and modern skyscrapers behind them served as background. The smiles in their face told the world they are confident and optimistic of the current and future of the world, personally having a good time with their counterparts in the brief break of their work. The harmonious picture, made up of traditional cloths, the modern buildings, the smile, conveyed to every corners of the world by the modern media. In fact, wearing the tradition cloths is becoming a new fashion among young people who supposed to only be crazy about the modern things.
In sum, whether modern and tradition can live together must be determined on a case-by-case basis. In some areas, the inherent nature make us only can choose one among two, while in most areas, they can work well--modern things facilitate our life and make it fashionable, along with traditional one to add some history and culture element into our life.
