TOPIC: ISSUE233 - "Although innovations such as video, computers, and the Internet seem to offer schools improved methods for instructing students, these technologies all too often distract from real learning."
WORDS: 415          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2007-8-2 21:35:40

I do not agree with the speaker's claim that the use of video, computers, and the Internet in school teaching distract students from real learning. The speaker is a little extreme on this issue, and I believe we should analyze this issue under certain circumstances.

In the first place, the concept of the real learning for students is not simply reading text books, listening to lectures or calculating mathematic problems, and the essence of real learning should be evaluated by the efficiency, quantity and quality of the school learning. Whether video, computers, and the Internet can do more good than harm to the students' learning is not as simply as that to what extent it violates the traditional manners of teaching and learning, because people should keep pace with the accelerating development of technologies, not only in their working area and house, but also and more important in the education field.

In the second place, it is not the innovations and new technologies themselves that can distract students from real learning, but the way how to use or combine them in students' daily learning. Innovations and new technologies are only tools, by using them in classes, some teachers may escape form their responsibilities of preparing lectures, helping students' assignments and giving advices. it is obviously not helpful if students only see video in classes. Without basic teaching, students will miss the foundamental knowledge, and be incapable of understanding certain materials, which can be easily obtained through traditional teaching of teachers' writing and solve problems step by step.

Finally, the video, computers, and the Internet provide new ways to the modern teaching and learning, which do faciliate the traditional one. People have common sense that it is easier that to understand, memorise and master knowledge through both listoning and looking. For example, in the class of history, if the students would be taught with lectures and video, it is possible that they can have good understanding about that class. Therefore, innovations and new technologies can be suppliment, and the dialy use of computers, the Internet and so on may also let students get access to the new knowledge of information, electronic and software. Are these things real knowledge? Of course.

In sum, people should adapt to the changes brought by innovations and new technologies, and make good use of them. Although it might sometimes be counterproductive in teaching and learning, people should focus on the optimistic aspects and try to find ways to better use them.
