The speaker holds the view of that some nonmainstream subjects and well meet people's satisfaction in the areas which main science does not address. Furthermore, he contends that such nonmainstream pursuits play a vital role in society. On general, I tend to agree with the former view but totally disagree with the latter assertion.

To begin with, we have to admit that some nonmainstream areas can give us a satisfying answer to certain events or a comfort to the unknown future. As we students can feel, we like to take a bowl of noodles and two eggs before our exams since this method may predict 100 scores. Similarly, before some graduates set out to take a job interview, they would like turn to astrology or Tarot cards to forecast good or ill luck. A main reason for this phenomenon is because people are under huge pressures of exams and finding jobs after graduation. That is to say, people pursuit these nonmainstream areas with the hope to get some certainty and, accordingly more self-confidence. But there has not been any mature system to assure people's mental ideas. From this point of view, the nonmainstream subjects have well reason to exist.

However, I hold a opposition to the opinion that nonmainstream pursuits play a vital role in society. Even we hope to get a better fortune by virtue of our consistence with some instructions provided by nonmainstream area, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal things, since the empirical facts and sufficient evidence will play a more vital role in people's action. There is a good case in point. Many Chinese believe in Feng shui, which is the ancient Chinese practice of trying to achieve health, harmony and presperity by using specific datas, numbers, building design and the placement of objects. Nevertheless, not all action is in accordence with that. Conspicuously, modern city has been fraught with buildings, which is called "concrete city", and citizens always appeal for more room. People make desicions with objective analysis of the local economic conditions, facilities, transportation and so forth much more than just Fengshui. Since we have reason ability in realistic society, nonmainstream subjects will not been taken too much into consideration.

Moreover, it is science that plays a significant role in our society in most aspects. Science enables us to cure serious ailments such as diabetes and cancer, which nonmainstream subjects cannot make an assurance invariably. Also, with the development of science we now have the ability to even control the weather such as artificial rain, which was explained as some mythical reason by the nonmainstream subjects. When taking a comprehensive overview at our history, it is virtually science that provides necessary impetus for the moving wheels of times.

Additionally, while nonmainstream pursuits indeed meet individuals' needs to some extent, we should seek help with science as possible as we can when it comes to serious problems. Admittedly, those nonmainstream areas have fascination to many individuals, since we sometimes can see, on magazines and internet, some interesting articles bases on the Western and Chinese zodiacs, blood types and Fengshui for entertainments and recreation only. We should pay more attention to those scientific facts and methods. Excessive reliance will just make people vulnerable to self-deception, false hopes and detrimental delusion.

To sum up, it is sensible to resort to areas such like astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and paranormal ideas when we need some satisfaction and comfort from the real world. It is more important to seek help with science, which indeed serves as no substitute to our society, as possible as we can.
