The speaker claims that education will be not truly effective unless it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. Admittedly, by satisfying the interests and needs of students, education can increase students’ motivation for learning, and then becomes more effective. However, as for me, I am firmly convinced that it is not enough to design education to simply meeting the interests of the students.
To begin with, we need to know what the purpose of the education is. In my point of view, goal of education is making people master knowledge, giving the basic living abilities to people and making them fit with the society. According with the definition of the purpose of education, few would dispute the fact that interests exert positive impact on effect of education, for the reason that interests can enhance student’s enthusiasm on study. An apt example can illustrate this point. Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft Corporation, who dropped out from Harvard to do what he is interested – to start the engine of Microsoft, and he is success. We can see through the example the important role interests played in people’s study; it is interest that makes bill studying computer technology well. Therefore, designing an education to meet people’s interests and needs would make it more effective.
However, simply meeting people’s initial interests and needs is not enough. Although Bill Gates knows what his real interest is, yet the majority of students do not know what their true interests and needs. Interests of persons might change with their growing. For example, we often hear children say they want to be a scientist in future, but maybe they will find science so boring after having mere studied of physics. So, for many disciplines, people cannot know whether they would have interest in them unless having gained insight into them. Under this circumstance, if education is designed to meet the people’s initially immature interests and needs, it would have little effect because these interests will change in future. As an old saying goes: you cannot ask for what you want unless you know what it is. So education should provide people with various disciplines in order to help they find what their true interest is.
Moreover, this multi-disciplines education can not only help people to find true interests, but also make them be versatile people. As I see it, in nowaday society, an accomplished person can better fit in society than a person with specific knowledge. Too special knowledge may make people be trapped in an unfavorable position in the future job markets. For example, many people’s job is not related to what they have learned in the collage, and if having little knowledge of the field they working in, people might be hard to do the job well. So in my point of view, an effective education should provide students knowledge of various disciplines in order to broaden their outlook to find the true interests and be more competitive in the future job markets
Beside this, education should provide people with others fundamental education like moral education, mathematics and so forth no matter pupils like or not, because this knowledge can attain the purpose of education that making people fit for a society. It is indisputable that these kinds of knowledge are very necessary for every pupil and even for every human being. Moral education makes people more reasonable and law-abiding, and meanwhile improves our quality of living. Similarly, mathematics and social skills are also basic survival skill; lack of them will hamper the development of our society. Therefore, if an education wants to be effective, it at least provides this sort of knowledge.
A conclusion can be drawn safely from what has been discussed above, that when education can meet people’s true interests, it would be more effective, but it is not enough to be truly effective; a truly effective education should at least provide people basic knowledge such as social skill and various knowledge that can broaden their outlook and knowledge.
