TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
提纲:1.部分同意作者的观点,作者忽略了批评家的社会贡献;
2.一方面,艺术家通过创造作品给社会带来一些具有持久性价值的东西;
3.另一方面,我们不能忽略了批评家的作用,为我们欣赏作品提供帮助,为我们选择一些值得我们去欣赏的作品;
4.批评家还给艺术家提供建议,艺术家通过选择性的接受这些建议来完善自己的作品;
5.结论,两者在为社会创造价值中都必不可少.
The value of the work created by the artist is up to its recognition by the people, whether the contemporaries or the descendants. Based on this definition of the value, I partly agree the speaker acclaim that it is not the critic but the artist who provide something of lasting value to the society. Without the help of the critic, we may miss some masterpieces. Thus, the speaker goes to extremes since the speaker overlooks the social value brought by the critic, who serves as a bridge between the artist and the audience.
On the one hand, the arts created by the artists express their private emotion or attitude to something as well as reflects most people's views and bring the society some valuable things, such as inspiration, mercy, and so on. Those great arts including paintings, music, literature, and so on, make our society increasingly rich and colorful. Standing front of ‘Mona Lisa’, the audience could feel the beauty beneath the painting. Listening to the ‘Hero and Fate’, the audience could be moved by Beethoven who became deaf when in his middle life. Reading ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, the audience could be inspired by Santiago’s ‘A man can be destroyed but not defeated.’ Without the artist, the arts die, and our society is in dull.
On the other hand, we should not overlook the function of critic. Sometimes, because of the limited knowledge of the audience or the obscure means used by the artist, it is difficult for the common people to understand the significance of the work. Since the critic is abundant in knowledge of some certain area and more familiar with the artist’s works than audience, the critic can not only select the good works for us which worth our time and attention, but it can also help us to interpret the idea and deep meaning which the artist want to express. One current examples involves ‘the Lord of the Rings’, one of the most renowned films in the year 2004, without knowing anything about the background of the film, we could just feel the fantasy and magnificence of the film. However, the film reviewer can provide more background information about this film and help us to learn about what the film composer want to express-- how terrible the war is.
Moreover, the critic can provide feedback to the artist, maybe praise or critics. And the artist can accept electively some information which they think is beneficial to them. For that matter, the artist can increasingly improve his work and create more value to the society.
Without the artist, the society may be in dull; without the critic, there may be a gap between the artist and the audience. Both the artist and critic play a pivotal and are indispensable role in creating some lasting value to the society. |
