87"In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
Is the beginner more tempting to make important discoveries than the expert in any field of inquiry,as the speaker maintains? I concede that in some circumstances the neophyte do have the enthusiastic and encourage to conquer something new or interesting. However, the abundant experience and the full-blownd knowledge that expert attained will help them more likely to make important discoveries.
Admittly, I agree with the statement insofar as the beginner doesn't have so many rituals and route on him, which makes him more likely to consider with his own brain. Without established theories and principles, he could see the world with a brand new aspect which will sometimes give him a big surprise. What is more, when people reach to a new realm, he is always aspired to do something impressing or even striking in that field. This drives him give more effort, thus, it becomes easier to success. For example, Watson, as a young scientist, showed his brilliant talent on biology and with his partner Crick find the Molecular structure of Nucleic Acids which shocked the world and contributed a great influence of this discipline’s development. As a beginner of his realm, Watson makes the discovery that many experts didn't, attributes to his courage and imagination.
However, when it comes to the fundamental knowledge and depth of thought, the beginner has to admit himself inferior to the expert. Lacking of some basic skills and unfamiliar to that field make the beginner hasn’t got a clear direction to follow, at the same time, may adopt an inadequate method to research. Actually, that kind of things happened most of the time, and can not be avoided. Moreover, the main task to a beginner is more learning than discovering as you can never run before learning to walk.
On the other hand, an "expert" can be called as "expert", must be for the reason that he dose something others can not reach, he knew something others don't understand, he thinks of something others don't consider, and he discoveries something others even paid no attention to. Obviously it is the expert rather than beginner hold the mainstream of any field of inquiry, thus they are more likely to make important discoveries. Archimedes, Newton, Edison, nearly every scientist gives more and more important discoveries after they become experts. As an expert, sometimes a famous scientist, one has more money, devices and excellent partners to support his research. That is to say, they have more opportunities to make important discoveries which benefit the whole world.
In sum, it is true that the beginner has large enthusiastic and willing to make progress, and along with the unfettered imagination, one may make inspired discoveries by effort or sometimes by fortune. However, the speaker unfairly overlooks the expert's advantages compared to the beginner: expert is more skilled, stable and experienced in one's field. Those feathers will help them to make important discoveries. |
