美国NIH的NIGMS对系统生物学的定义是：

A discipline at theintersection of biology, mathematics, engineering, and the physicalsciences that integrates experimental and computational approaches tostudy and understand biological processes in cells, tissues, andorganisms. Studies at the systems level are distinguished not only bytheir quantitative nature in data collection and mathematical modeling,but also by their focus on interactions among individual elements suchas genes, proteins, and metabolites. These studies often integrate datafrom multiple levels of the biological information hierarchy in anenvironmental and evolutionary context and pay particular attention todynamic processes that vary in time and space. Successive iterations ofexperiment and theory development are characteristic of systemsbiology. When applied to human health, systems biology models areintended to predict physiological behavior in response to natural andartificial perturbations and thereby contribute to the understandingand treatment of human diseases.

1. 加州大学尔湾分校的Center for Complex Biological Systems

NIGMS在2007年8月开始对这一中心给予资助，五年共14.5百万的经费。UCI新建的研究专业名称是：
Graduate Program in Mathematical and Computational Biology （MCB），http://mcsb.bio.uci.edu/ .
学生通过这一专业入学，完成第一年所要求的课程后，选定导师，然后成为导师所在系的PhD Program
的学生，最后获得所在系的PhD学位，而不是Mathematical and Computational Biology学位。

这一专业的研究领域众多，包括：

Bioinformatics, Biological Physics, Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering, Cancer Biology, Systems Biology等等，
