Does Northwestern limit the number of international students?
No. Northwestern seeks the most diverse student body possible and does not place limits on the number of students from any country or group of countries.
Is there a separate application process for international applicants?
No. International applicants follow the same application procedures as domestic applicants. International applicants are required to demonstrate English language proficiency and may be asked to submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination.
Does Northwestern accept the Common Application?

You can check the status of your application at: https://ugadm.northwestern.edu/application/. Due to the high volume of mail that the Office of Undergraduate Admission receives and the time it takes to enter information in the database, it may take several days for your materials to post online. If you sent materials to Northwestern but they don't appear on your checklist, do not worry. During some parts of the year, it may take several days or even weeks before all mail is processed. If the application deadline passes, the admission staff will contact you about submitting a missing item before canceling your application.
Does Northwestern accept documents in a language other than English?
No. All applicants with foreign academic credentials must provide Northwestern with certified English translations of their original transcripts. Applicants may use any transcript translation service including one in their home country. The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) maintains a list of some of the companies that will provide this service.
The questions on the NU application don't fit my educational system regarding grades, GPA, college counseling, type of curriculum, etc. What should I do?

Indicate as best you can the information that the application requests. If you cannot find an appropriate place for the information, please submit it as additional information.
In my country/school system, we don't have time for extracurricular activities. Will this put me at a disadvantage in the application process?
Northwestern understands that students in some countries and school systems have restricted time for involvement beyond school work. We also know that the importance of these activities is seen differently in many parts of the world. Although this knowledge is taken into account, applicants are still expected to pursue activities (organized or unorganized) during their free time.
At my school, my teacher/counselor doesn't know me well. May I substitute a recommendation from a supervisor of an extracurricular activity, a coach, or a family friend?

Other recommendations may be submitted in addition to one that discusses classroom performance. The Office of Undergraduate Admission prefers that the number of submitted recommendations not exceed three.
Do I need to have my secondary school send a midyear report and/or a final report?
Regardless of your education system or timeline, you should have your secondary school submit information about your academic performance during the middle and at the end of your final year. In some cases, this will include predicted and final examination scores.

: d! p8 c- u* C( KA small number of applicants each year decide to leave their secondary school early for various reasons. Northwestern encourages all students to finish a program that will allow them to enter a university in their home country. Students who apply with partially completed academic programs are at a serious disadvantage in the admission process.
Do I have to take the SAT Reasoning Test (SAT I) or the ACT?
All applicants to Northwestern must take either the SAT Reasoning Test (SAT I) or the ACT with Writing. Northwestern understands that it may be difficult to take these tests in certain countries. However, any application submitted without these scores will not be considered complete.
% Z% N$ M( a0 s4 j( `Do I have to take the TOEFL? Which version? Is there a minimum score?
# K/ _# ]$ _, \Most international applicants to Northwestern submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to demonstrate their level of English proficiency. If you come from a country where English is the primary/official language and your schooling has been in English, you are not required to submit a TOEFL score. If you live in a non-English speaking country and your schooling (at least two years) has been in English, you are still required to submit a TOEFL score unless your score on the Critical Reading section of the SAT Reasoning Test is above 600. All other international applicants must submit a TOEFL score.
( x8 M9 D/ W/ y, E3 V3 ^% L) a& c% ENorthwestern will continue to accept the paper-and-computer based versions of the test until the Internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT) is fully implemented and available to all countries. Northwestern does not accept scores from other English proficiency exams including the TOEFL Institutional Testing Program (ITP) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
There is no minimum score required by Northwestern. However, competitive applicants are expected to have a high level of English proficiency and typically score above 600 on the paper-based version, above 250 on the computer-based version, or above 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL.

You must specify a major if you are applying to the School of Communication, the Medill School of Journalism, or the School of Music. If you are applying to the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education and Social Policy, or the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, you may select the undecided major. All applications are evaluated using the same criteria regardless of the applicant's chosen major.

However, the Kellogg School of Management offers two certificate programs for undergraduates in Financial Economics and Managerial Analytics. Does Northwestern interview prospective students?

A student who does not interview is NOT at a disadvantage in the admission process. Alumni interviews are available in only a few locations outside of the United States. When should I expect to receive my admission decision and how will it arrive?

Will I be able to defer my admission to Northwestern because of my country's mandatory National Service or for another reason?
9 l) l5 f# d) S" n0 d. Q3 i& F! p; zNorthwestern is familiar with the National Service requirement that is compulsory in some countries. Admitted students who reserve a space in the class may defer admission to Northwestern in order to fulfill this duty. Requests for deferral due to National Service or for another reason must be made in writing to the Dean of Admission and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. When Northwestern offers a student deferral, it is with the understanding that they will not use this opportunity to enroll for academic credit at another post-secondary institution. Northwestern will not award credit for any course work done during the deferral period.

Results of the Baccalaureate, Abitur, A-levels, and other university entrance examinations will be evaluated on an individual basis for the possible award of up to one full year of academic credit. All freshmen are guaranteed housing in a University residence. Housing after freshman year is not formally guaranteed, but most students continue to live on campus.

Most international students are unable to visit Northwestern before applying. However, if you have the opportunity to visit the Chicago area, you should have no problem including Northwestern as part of your visit. Chicago has two major airports and both are not far from Northwestern. The Evanston campus sits on the shore of Lake Michigan and is less than an hour from the center of Chicago and is easily accessible by public transportation.

Who is accepted to Northwestern?

Students admitted to Northwestern must be clearly capable of succeeding in the University's academic environment. The middle 50 percent of test scores for entering students ranges from 29 to 33 on the ACT; on the SAT Reasoning Test, the critical reading range was 650 to 730 and the math from 660 to 750. The most reliable predictor of success at Northwestern is a strong academic performance at the secondary school level. The mean high school class rank of enrolled freshmen has been at the 94th percentile.

Students who have been educated at home are required to submit the results of three SAT Subject Tests in addition to their SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with writing results. How important is my secondary school record?
The evaluation of your secondary school transcript is an important part of the admission process. We are not simply looking for high grades; the strength of your academic program is also weighed. In addition, the admission committee makes note of any accelerated, honors, or Advanced Placement courses taken.

What other factors do you consider in making an admission decision?
" E$ M5 k2 c/ e& XEach application is reviewed carefully by several members of our admission committee. To help us make these difficult decisions, we seek information beyond school transcripts and test scores. We take into account your involvement outside of class, as profiled in an activity chart, and read your essays to get a better sense of your interests, thought processes, and writing ability. Recommendations from secondary school teachers and counselors add perspective to your achievements. The qualities we look for in each candidate are independent thinking, a sense of humor, self-confidence, energy, enthusiasm, and an interest in activities, people, and ideas.

Financial Aid for International Students
Northwestern University will offer need-based financial aid awards to a small group of international students entering in Fall 2008. Citizens of foreign countries who apply under Regular Decision for financial aid will be reviewed as a separate group.

The usual selective admission criteria, as well as the amount of financial aid needed by an applicant, will be factors in the admission committee's decision. As a result, Northwestern will not offer admission to some candidates who are otherwise well-qualified. For these reasons, the admission rate for international applicants requesting aid is substantially lower than for those not requesting aid. Only those students who apply for and receive financial aid for their freshman year will be eligible to receive financial assistance in subsequent years. There is no financial aid available for international transfer applicants or international students applying under Early Decision.

U.S. citizens living abroad, permanent residents of the U.S., and other eligible non-U.S. citizens may receive financial aid from Northwestern and should follow the same application process as U.S. citizens for financial aid. Enrolling permanent residents will be asked to submit the proper documents showing their immigration status to finalize the award.

Northwestern University does not prescribe the curriculum candidates should study in secondary school, but expects clear academic success and strong results in all courses and on all examinations.

Prior to the expected date of enrollment at Northwestern, students should complete an academic program which would allow them to enter a university in their home country. For example, students in a British-based education system should complete A-level examinations before enrollment. Most applicants will begin the application process during their final year of pre-university preparation. Students who have already enrolled at another postsecondary institution are not eligible for freshman admission and should apply for transfer admission.

0 I# O% R! b8 `9 w3 t' M4 P1 mDue to application materials deadlines, applicants should have their schools send predicted scores for university entrance examinations (e.g. A-level, Baccalaureate, Abitur, International Baccalaureate, Australian HSC, etc.) to the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Admitted students should send official copies of the final results when they become available. These final scores will be evaluated by the University registrar on an individual basis for the possible award of up to one full year of academic credit.

Northwestern University requires all undergraduate applicants, whether educated in the United States or abroad, to submit the results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT Reasoning Test) or American College Test (ACT) with writing.

Undergraduate applicants must demonstrate a certain level of English proficiency to insure that they will be able to complete their degree requirements at Northwestern. Students whose first language is not English or whose schooling has not been in English are required to submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Northwestern will continue to accept the paper-and-computer based versions of the test until the Internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT) is fully implemented and available to all countries.

Students whose schooling has been primarily in English are not required to submit a TOEFL score if their score on the Critical Reading section of the SAT Reasoning Test is above 600. Northwestern does not accept scores from other English proficiency exams including the TOEFL Institutional Testing Program (ITP) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
