TOPIC: ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.

"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

The arguer asserts that the sale of Whirlwind's video games will increase in next few months. With the conclusion, the arguer uses the evidences that a survey indicates players will prefer the games with great graphics, and that the company itself has just introduced several such games with a advertising to a people 10 to 25, which are considered to be most consuming construction in the game market. However, I find that the arguer's conclusion is fallacious with such reasons below.

At the first place,  the arguer false to establish a fallacious relationship between the graphic feature and the increase of sale. Though the survey’s result indicates that it is the most essential factor, the arguer ignores other factors which may influence the sale much more, such like the music in the games, the attractiveness of the story and some factors related to the company itself--its attitude to the customers and its services after the sale and so on. If the arguer can not eliminate such reasons,  it can not persuade me that the graphic feature influence the sale of video games directly and mostly.

What's more, even if the graphic feature determines the sale, as the arguer asserts, the computers must be the most up-to-date to run such games. As is known to all, such advanced computers are based on the high technology and would be very costly. While considering that whether it is necessary to spend so much on a computer for just the goal of games towards common-income families and whether it is the same that every player is so fanatic to the pursue of graphic, the arguer cannot convince me that the graphics are so important in sale.

Secondly, the arguer can not prove that the introduction of Whirlwind to the people 10 to 25 will necessarily lead to their loyalty to the company’s production. As we know, there are lots of companies in the world famous of graphics video games, for instance, the Blizzard whose Warcraft3 is praised for its perfect pictures present to the players. Even if we only focus on the graphic factor and believe that it will control the sale, the arguer can not prove that Whirlwind is the best graphic manufacturer in the field. And the extensive advertising campaign Whirlwind take cannot also make up the consumers' preference as more effective and active advertising actions can be copied or even better presented by other professional ad companies.

Last but not least,  even if the age-group from 10 to 25 who likely to play video  games , fanatic to graphic and persuaded by the Whirlwind's advertisements, as is known to all, they can not construct the most part in the consuming market. Though the arguer do not tell us whether the survey facing to all or only the 10 to 25 people, even with assumption that it merely concerning about the later group , it is obvious that such age-people, most of who are still in the school and have not enough abilities to earn what they want to buy. Thus without enough evidence to refute the consideration above, the arguer cannot simply draw the conclusion that the sale will increase.

To sum up, as the arguer cannot confirm the role graphic playing in the overall game quality and the influence on the consumer, the effectiveness of its advertising campaign and the consuming ability of the 10 to 25 age people, the conclusion that the sale will increase based on the assumptions above is not persuading.
