History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannothelp people to make important decisions today

The author asserts that history only teaches us that knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today. I totally disagree insofar as history can help people make present decisions; furthermore, the author overlooks other benefits of history.

To begin with, with the development of the society, the world has become more and more complicated than ever before, some of the information and method of the history that used to function well no longer be useful now. Nevertheless, to some extend, the world is no complex than before as the basic principal and knowledge of the past are still and can still work very well. Even those we think are out of time can shine some light on the decision we making today. Moreover, the development of society in history is often that of a spiral process, knowing about the past will, more or less, help us have a thorough understanding of today’s situation and thus help us make decision of today or even predict the future. German, for instance, knows about their history fully well that Nazism had not only hurt the European and Judah but also cause tremendous economic loss of the whole world. So today, the government of Germany makes coercion on any form of Nazism. The decision of the German government on the past definitely will benefit the people of all nation as a whole.

Beside from helping people to make important decisions today, history has myriads of other different functions as well. History, for example, inspires us to make great achievement just like the old famous people did. A student learns the history of Marthen Luther King and Gandhi may be inspired by their tenacity and fearless when faced with the difficulty or even death, and in the later life, more or less, they will follow these forerunners on how to face their own difficulties. A student learns the history of Lincoln who devotes himself to the emancipation of the salve will be more likely to devote themselves to their own study and career.

Beside, history also helps us avoid making the same mistakes again. Without the benefit of history we will have nothing to rely on, and therefore we are more likely to repeat the same mistake with which the loss is not only a lot of time and money but also the opportunity for us to have a more comfort life. History tell that development of economy on the basis of environment loss is not a health way of development and the whole society will eventually suffer from the mistaken we have made. Thus the mistakes of the past make us more aware of the environment and which will guarantee us a harmonious future. History also helps us realize that a government should not lay its authority on coercion as which will ultimately lead to the overturn of the government.

In addition, the benefit is not limited to what I illustrate above. History also help us appreciate the heritage of the past and help us has a sense of citizenship, love of country and to name a few.

To sum up, history not only helps us make decision today, it also has many other functions as well. It inspire us to make great achievement and help us avoid repeat the same mistake. In the final analysis, the history is so important that we cannot stand to loss.
