TOPIC: ARGUMENT145 - A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person-often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed-and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

The author, in this material, recommends that those who snore should try their best to eat relative less food than the average person and to exercise more. The argument is problematic in several respects, thus render the recommendation unconvincing as it stands.
First of all, the author fails to provide evidence that snoring caused the people gaining weight. The study, the author cited to support his argument, which indicated that the people who snore are more likely to gain weight than those who do not snore, does not sufficient show that snoring contribute to gaining weight. It is entirely possible there are other factors rather snoring responsible for the gaining weight. For example, less excerse, which cause the people suffer from the gaining weight. Also, the unhealth diet, too much heat and fat in their food make them tend to be fat. And another factor, working in the office for long time, which is trouble the most of the withe-collors, can also cause gaining weight. And myriade other possiblities should be considered. Without ruling out these factors, the author cannot convince me that it is snore cause the gaining weight.
In addition, the author informs us that many people who stop breathing during the night, which wakes the person and leave them so tired that they cannot doing exercise. In this statement, the author provide no evidence how many people who snore will suffer from the apnea. Merely mention "many" cannot be persuasive to show that this is the symbol of the people who snore, thus teh further argument that these people who are too tired during the day to exercise is indefensible . Even assume apnea is the common symbol of people who snore, the author fails to present evidence that it is cause of less exercise. Perhaps other factors--rather than apnea is the cause. For example, the laziness, the great work pressure and the like.
Finally, even I were concede that snoring cause the people tired and they cannot exercise during the day, the recommendation to eat less and excercise more for these people is perhaps unreasonable. They too tired to execise, the author has told us so, which makes the exercise not a good advise. And the people who are suffer from some physical problem, eat less will be dangerous.
In sum, to convince that the recommendation is resonable, the author need to provide evidence that it is snoring cause the gaining weight. And autor also need to present evidence that snore is the cause of apnea which cause the less exercise. To better assess the recommendation, I need the evidence that eat less and more exercise can help the peple keep health |
