TOPIC: ISSUE74 - "The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language."
WORDS: 820 MODIFIED
The very first minute we come to this world, we observe the world with curious eyes. The impression of the world was stored in our mind in the form of image then, because we didn’t know one word at that time, let along language. Thus image is the first way we communicate with the world. But does this mean that image is the most effective way of communication? It is tempting to hasten that the answer “Yes”. Whether language or image is more effective in communication is far from a straightforward issue, because of different advantages they hold respectively. Generally, image is friendly, accurate, while language is rich and profound. We have to consider the issue on a case-to-case base in order to assess it objectively.
To begin with, we should know what the effective way of communication is. First, for a receiver, the basic requirement of communication, in my view, is that we are able to understand what the others meaning. Then the further and higher requirement is that we can understand easily and with the minimum misunderstanding. Second, let's stand on the speakers--use the term we generally use in conversation, perhaps not the one not speak, just the information source-- standpoint, they should express their idea easily and can be understood by most of the listeners. Thus only a way can satisfy the requirement of both sides can be regarded as an effective way of communication.
Let's check the characters of image to assess its effect in communication. Images generally serve as a more friendly way of communication compared with others and thus more easily be accepted and remembered. For most of people, we will prefer to watch a movie rather than a novel because the visual effect the movie offered is more attractive than the millions of words. Second, widely used as a symbol or mark in the public building and package of goods, the image shows its advantage of expressing the idea in a precise and effective way. For example, a red cross on a cigarette means no smoking while an image of cup printed on the package tells you the good inside should be take and move carefully. Beside preciseness and effectives, the most critical merit of these images is that the universal meaning it carried. Nearly all the people can understand them. This advantage will be more obvious against language when they are viewed by foreigners who don’t know the description language near the image. The icon in the computer desktop, the trademark, and even the symbol of Olympic Game serve the similar function. Finally, the special character of image, perhaps less closely related to communication but help enhance communication, is that it present the views pleasure. This is image’s function of arts, which help the viewer communicate with the artists directly, and with the other viewers indirectly.
Compared with image, language which traditionally is considered to be the most common way of communication--no matter speaking or writing--shows their inherent advantage by offering some special functions. First, language can express richer information than image. To witness this, you need look no further than the people's life and work. Which is most commonly used? When we make a conversation, we express our idea by speaking accompanied with the gesture to make a better effect. Also, we express our idea by writing, when write a mail to our friends. In both of these circumstances, image would serve as a poor substitute for language, how can you only express your idea by body language or by a set of images? And how can you send a mail full of images. Second, language is profound than image. The typical example is the way of teaching. For an art teacher, who would like to use a set of pictures to let the students understand his meanings, this is more effective than a long language expression. However, for a mathematic teacher, this way will surely turn out to be terrible. The strict proof, the formula, the theories and the like can hardly be expressed by image. While express them as the printing material in textbook on blackboard will be better. Similarly, no image can replace the lecture of Martin Luther King’s speech by providing the same effects. In short, the special functions the language presented guarantee its dominate position in communication.
In sum, it is hasty to generalize that image is the most effective way of communication. Though image show its advantage over language in several fields because it is friendly, accurate thus attractive, language is used more popular. Just as we like to use an image to help we express our idea in writing materials, use gesture to help us express our thoughts when speak, only by using both side-by-side, can we make a better communication. This may help explain why the movie, which combined the image element and the language element, can be so popular. |
