TOPIC: ARGUMENT175 - The following appeared in a letter to the school board in the town of Centerville.
"All students should be required to take the driver's education course at Centerville High School. In the past two years several accidents in and around Centerville have involved teenage drivers. Since a number of parents in Centerville have complained that they are too busy to teach their teenagers to drive, some other instruction is necessary to ensure that these teenagers are safe drivers. Although there are two driving schools in Centerville, parents on a tight budget cannot afford to pay for driving instruction. Therefore an effective and mandatory program sponsored by the high school is the only solution to this serious problem."

The author, in the letter, recommends that the high school should sponsor a mandatory program to help all the student accept driver's education course at Centerville High School. The recommendation is problematic in several aspects, thus render it unconvincing as it stands.
First of all, whether the students should be required take the driver's education course at Centerville High School is uncertain. Because the author merely tells us teenage drivers were involeved in serveral accidents in and around Centerville in the past two years, this is infficient to indicate that the students requie driver's education. First, it is highly possbile that the incident was caused by the other factors--rather than the reason of drivers. For exmple, the weather, there perhaps more rains in Centerville, which caused more accidents. Then consider the bad road quality, which contribute to the increased car accidents. and myriad other factors should not be easily rule out. Second, even if the driver should be responsibe for the accidents, the teenage drivers who are involved may be not driving the car when the incident happen. Third, even the teenage driver driving the car caused the accident, whether the driver's education course can solve the problem is up to grab. Perhaps there are other more effective way, such as requiring their parents accompany with the their children, or limit the driver's age to be even older.
In addition, even assume that the driver's education course is necessary. The parents 's complaint that they are too busy to teach their teenagers to drive is perhaps considered as an execuse. How busy these parents are, are there really some even more important thing than the safty of their children's safty. The further information that some parent cannot afford to pay for drivng instruction of two driving schools in Centerville, the author fails to provide evidence whether there are other driving school which charge a low fee in Centerville or near Centerville. After all the professional school will be better than the driver's course at high school.
Finally, event the teenagers cannot find other idea driver's course and they cannot be taught by their parents, a mandatory program sponsored by the high school is not a reasonable solution. First, school has its own responsiblity. if the general education was affected by the driver's course, whether this course is worthwhile should be reconsidered. Second, even if this will not affect students' learning, it is entire possible the school cannot find the qualified teachers and cannot afford the fee.
In sum, to convince me that driver's education course sponsored by the high school is the reasonable solution to the problem, the author need to provide evidence the increasing accidence in the past two years was directly related to the teenagers and they have to accept driver's education to reduce the accidnetal rate. And the austor also need present evidence that the parents cannot teach their children for some reason. To better assess the recommendation, the author need to prove that the new course will not affect the students' study. |
