TOPIC: ISSUE138 - "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
WORDS: 699 MODIFIED
这篇是模考期间写完之后改动最少的一篇了,只加了90个字。
"What is mistake, nothing but the first step to do something better," American statesman Phillips Wendell once said. And I fundamentally agree with the author's assertion that we can make progress only through mistakes. This is demonstrated from both and empirical and generative standpoint.
The first thing we experience in this world, few will argue, is definitely the mistake and defeat. To witness this, you need look no further the baby who is hold by their mother. How many times repeat later can he learn to utter a "mum"? And how many times falling down are needed before he can make his first step without the guide of parents? And we still can clearly remember how sad it is that we first experience a failure in the exam in school, and how awkward it is to be criticized by the leader in the company because of our terrible performance. Then we learn from these failures, from these mistakes, and made progress and success. Therefore, the personal experience most clearly shows us how critical mistakes are for our growing up and for our progress.
Similarly, mistakes, for a nation's development, are inevitable and helpful too. History are replete with such examples, a country's up and down is accompanied with her learning from his previous mistakes. The paradigmatic example immediately comes to mind is the significant development of China in the past several years. Before the adoption of "reform and opening up" policy in 1978 pioneered by Mr. Deng Xiaoping, China has suffered from a big chaos, which resulted from an activity called culture revolution lunched by the leaders at that time, the economy, culture, science, education and nearly all the aspects experienced a disaster. Especially the economy almost reached the edge of debacle. The great mistake presented a lesson to the leaders of the nation as well as the people in the society, also serve as a driving force to stimulate they proceed and achieve the success. The dramatic development attract the world, the Chinese people believe they can do even better after living through this mistake, but the mistake memory is remained in their mind and their history to give them lesson for their future development.
In nearly every field, without mistake cannot make progress or discovery. This is even true when come to scientific research, in which the people outside like to applaud the final success or discovery and highly praise the talent of the scientists while totally ignored the process of their research work which is full of mistakes and failures. The most typical example is the invention of lamp. The American inverter Edison, who is perhaps the greatest inverters in history, tried more than two thousand materials before he finally found tungsten filament. Every time he learned from the mistake he experienced last time and then continued. It is hard to image what the world we live will look like if he yielded to the one of these two thousand mistakes, maybe we are still living in the darkness.
Martin Luther King is probably most precisely described the right attitude toward mistakes. As he said: “we can accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.” Only by learning from mistakes, struggling with mistakes, keeping confidence, choosing trying another time rather easily giving up, can we make the final success.
In sum, we can firmly draw the conclusion that the one who make no mistake does not usually make anything. Because mistake, which is as same as success, is one experience, and it is even more meaningful for the development in a long run compared with successful experience to some degree, because you are doing something you are supposed cannot do. You can surely surpass yourself if you can live through the mistakes. This is especially important for the young people, who are in the process of learning. Shaw Bernard, an artist of Ireland, once said: "When I was young, I observed that one of the ten things I did was failure, so I did ten times more". His achievement also clearly demonstrated how important it is to experience mistake. So, let's say "if you meet mistakes, congratulations, you are going to make a progress." |
