The first minute coming to this world, we saw the smile of our parents and the nurses. It is the first impression of the world stored in our mind, we cannot talk, and perhaps we cannot think at that time, but we can smile or cry to express our happiness and excitement to coming to this world. The emotion is so critical for us at that time and in the future of our life, and greatly influenced how we live in the world. However, it seems that the education system fails to pay enough attention to explore emotions as expected. The ability of logical thinking, reasoning, analyzing, which looks more practical to the future work, is emphasized by the educational system and the society.
Admittedly, the ability of reasoning, logical thinking, understanding, analyzing and the like, which is regarded as the unique feature of human being , is the basic requirement for a man to learn something, and to deal with some affairs. In the society, the one who are excellent at these fields, such as the scientists, the engineers and the like, are generally applauded to be talent and highly praised. And thus the training of this ability is thought to be the main task of educational system. To witness this, you need look no further than the lecture schedule of the schools, no matter the elementary schools or the college and university, the majority of the lectures are those closely related to this ability: Mathematic, physics, chemistry, logic and the like. Because it is thought to such ability will greatly determine your performance in the work---no matter a software developer, a sales manager or the other work--this ability is critical for your work.
However, the training in the logical thinking, which supposed to be the key factors to influence our work and life, has been so excessively emphasized that the other ability training, which perhaps are even more important for one's work and for one's life, is ignored completely, such as the ability to explore self emotions, which is, in my view, even more decisive to both one’s future life and work and to the society who are living in.
First, on an individual level, few will argue, the most successful people in every field are the one who have strong personality besides have excellent background in their professions. Seneca, an writer of ancient Roma once said: “the most powerful man is he who has himself in his own power,” Emotion serve as catalyst to one's success, if dealt properly, it can help you achieve what you expected. The paradigmatic example is the excellent athletes, who are required to fully take advantage of their emotions to help them win the game, especially in the key games. How to overcome the nervousness and how to explore potential at the game is an art rather than ability. Jordan, Armstrong Deng Yapping and the like, those who have demonstrated their courage, commitment and personality are all the masters in these fields. In the contrast, it can affect or even destroy you when not dealt well. A sad example is Virginia Tech shooting. Cho Seung-hui a 24 years old student come from Korea, astonished the world by killing 33 people which was thought to be the deadliest shooting rampage in US history. The material found from this notes mentioned railed against “rich kids”, hostility against people around him and refusing communicating with the other people shown his lack of emotional control, though we don’t not whether there are perhaps other factors caused his extreme action. The effective training in the non-intelligence can help the students develop a fully and healthy personality and reduce the possibility of such tragedy.
Second, on a social level, the ignorance of emotional education of young men will put the future of world at risk to some degree. The stronger ability the students gained from schools, the bigger such risk will be, and perhaps it will be far more serious that the tragedy cited before. For example, a talent student, who is excellent in nuclear physics, is surely will be a great scientist or engineer in this field. But he dream is not to contribute his work to the benefit of the world but to make the most powerful weapon to destroy the world. We have seen such crazy scientists in the fiction, and cannot afford to let it come true. And also some scientists are seeking to clone human being. They are enjoying their achievement in this area while completely not realize that their work is morally and ethically wrong because of killing of human embryos, the unsafe process of cloning, and the resulting consequences of deformed clones. Thus helping the students know what is encouraged to do and what is not by teaching the student known what is right and what is wrong and building a healthy value system are far more critical than teach them how to do in a special fields.
In sum, the ability to explore self emotions, which has been ignored by the society and educational system, play a pivotal role in our life and work. How to control our emotion and how to take advantage of it to help us achieve our goal is the ability need special training in the school, which will help the students develop a happy life and serve as catalyst for the other academic study. There should be certain courses to teach the students how to explore their own emotion. This is become even more urgent when it comes to the current world where everyone is under greater pressure than before. |
