Issue 176 "The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset. Therein lies the value of each."
字数:556 时间:不限时少于2小时 注:Argument没写
Following the way of composing epigrams, the speaker expresses its idea that science funtions to reassure and art is meant to upset. “Therein lies the value of each” conveys the speaker’s understanding of their value. Personally, I am fond of the spearker’s way of composing its ideas into an epigram-like sentence. However, I don’t agree to its opinion about the function and purpose of science and art respectively.
It is science and techonlogy advancement, which is what we are willing to see, that reassure us, who often confronting things that we are not sure about solving it. Modern physics lead human beings to a fantastic micro-world which used to be a mystery, or even nothing, to the mankind. The atomic technology, which was stimulated and developed by such a branch of modern science, introduced a brand new way of releasing and collecting energy from a source outside of traditional scope. Atomic science, indeed, reassure human beings that there is still at least one way of sustaining the energy earth dwellers need. Nonthless, the side effect of atomic technology reminds us that science sometimes funtions to scare and even hurt. Fearing terrorists otain atomic weapons, America and most of the other countries are trying to hold hands to scatter the cloud of atomic weapon perils.
Regarding science and its function, the speaker neglects some of the side effect of it. Per the purpose of art, the speaker makes a similar mistake, and this time the primary purpose of art is ignored over some of the unintended side effects. To make it clear, the primary purpose of art is to satisfy the pyschological need of human being, instead of upsetting. Art is a wide genre. However, nearly all forms of art originats in people’s demands aside from eating, work and sleep. As historians and archiologists’ study reveals, art is aimed to entertain and pacify people who creat it. Take the lullaby, which is one original form of folk music, for example, mothers sing it to comfort their babies, and the purpose of it is everything but upsetting. The Secret Garden, symphony and sometimes eletronic music composed by a verstile band from Europe, spreads all over the world in an overwhelming but moving way. The purpose of such art is to enable listeners to resonnate on themes like nature, life and love.
Adimttedly, some specific works of art conveys melancoly to some of the viewers or listeners, and sometimes even upset them. Two points should be made clear in order to understand the limited side effect caused among people. First, the creator of a certain piece of art controls the specific form of art, but they don’t and cann’t determine the way people intepret it. Therefore, works can both excite and upset people. Second, in most cases artists intend to express their understanding and emotion on something, and share it. It is the audience themselves who choose to be upset, and it is not what arts want. To conclude it, art might upset some of the audience, however, its purpose of it is not to upset, but to express, share and resonate.
To wrap up, the value of science and art doesn’t lies in the tortured interpretion, like the speaker’s, rather in the good willings mankind embodies on them and the fulfilment of mankind’s both physical and psychological needs.
