circadian system

rhythms with periods of approximately 24hr are widespread in nature. those that pesist in constant conditions are termed circadin rhythems and reflect the activity of endogenous biological clock. plant, including arabidopsis, are richly rhythmic.
expression analysis, most recently on genomic scale, indicate that arabidopsis circadian clock regulates a number of key metabolic pathways and stress responsees.a number of sensitive and high through-put assay have been developed to monitor the arabidopsis clock. these assays have facilitated theidetentification of components of plant circadian system through genetic and molecular biological studies. althouth much remains to be learned, the framework of arabidopsis circadian system is coming into focus.

commonly, one considers the circadian system as consisting of three components: an input pathway(usually discribed as a photoreceptor) that entrains the clock, the central clock and the output pathways to generate overt rhythms.

finally, the exciting recent progress in elucidating the oscillator mechanism in plants will be considered. we are frequently being reminded that the formal dissections of any circadian system into input, osillator and output is arbitrary and the lines between components are blurred. this will become particularly evident in the attempt to identify components of the central oscillator.
