Argument 220
The following appeared in an article in a magazine for writers. "A recent study showed that in describing a typical day's conversation, people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction. This result suggests that, compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Therefore, people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media."

In this argument, the author suggests writers to strengthen training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media. The reasons he or she provides is a comparison between watching television and reading fiction referred to in a typical day’s conversation. Then the writer considers this study results show a tendency of profitability in television Industry and publishing industries. Finally, he or she gives out above suggestion. However, after close examine, several logical flaws are evolved in which make the suggestion unreliable.

Firstly, the results of the study the argument mentioned are questionable for that we do not know what a “typical conversation” is. The author provides no more evidence or information to prove the condition happened in that typical conversation is what likes. It is possible that the conversation would be just carrying on between several young people who love watching television than reading, and they are talking about recently World Cup Game or new Hollywood films, which results in they refers to more about television than reading. Or two business man are talking about a lately news they both concern one watching from the last day’s news. And based on common sense, people in working time seldom talk about reading fiction, but have chance to mention watching television. But the condition in people’s leisure time may be contrary.

Secondarily, even the study reflects universal phenomena in people’s conversation; the results cannot show author’s prediction about television industries and publishing industries. Since compared with watching TV, less people might prefer to reading fiction, but it does not mean less people would like reading other publishes, such as newspaper, magazine or other books. From my observation, many business man or officers clerks have habits to read newspaper in the morning, some technical workers often study new technology through reading lately technical documents, and historians or societies do their research by consulting historical or philosophy materials. In addition, even those literature lovers may choose other forms literates, like prose, poem or biography, besides fiction. All of these people are honest readers to publish media.

Thirdly, the author fails to consider alternative aims of people who want to become writers. One want to be writer may be not only for profitability, but instead for interests or belief. Such as some popular writers seem writing as his or her hobby, and meanwhile, they have other jobs for livings. Again, writers do not only serve for print media or television, while they can also write for politics, business or technology. For instance, they might find jobs as secretaries in government or corporations. They may also write for Internet, being a network writer. Like a large number of current writers publish their works in Internet for easily broadcasting and facilitating more people reading. The author fails to consider these alternatives so that his or her proposal is untenable.

In conclusion, the author does not analyze and conclude the study well and make an unreasonable suggestion at last. Whether the results of the above study are universal should be reconsidered. In addition, more evidence should be provided to manifest that the times television and fiction referred in people’s conversation actually have correlation to the prospect markets of television and publish media. Finally, before evaluate all possible alternatives that why person choose too be a writer, the author has better not to give any suggestion arbitrarily.
