ISSUE36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
[Outline]: 1.
The evaluation of the greatness of individuals should be defined as, in some sense, one's contributions to his society, his community or so. Since most of the time the contribution is not that easy to be acquired even hard to be perceived within a short period, there is the notion that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries. While I agree that the greatness of a person, to a certain degree, can be valued by his later ages and there should be lots of reasons that impede the correct judgment for great individuals by their comtemporaries, at the same time their contemporaries still have the right and correspondent worthwhile ideas to judge their achievements.
Retrospect humans' history, there are lots of scientists, artists and physicists who were not acknowledged by the fellow countryman. Their ideas were seldom accepted by the relative fields, if there were, it must not be the new and top-notch ideas but something that didn't transgress the will of the government or the social situation at that time. For example, Copernics, Bruno, Darwin and so on, none of them were recognized by the authority field immediately, they experience the most unimaginable hard test in their life not the test from the formal and objective academic angle but the one that related to the doubt, suspect and untrusting. Sometimes, for the public, the contemporaries are not intend to accept the new ideas which may destroy or just alter their existing operating social system or the long standing principles lie in their heart, they are reluctant to accept the cut edging emerging things since they believe it is a kind of substance to make the whole society into a chaos. For the higher classes who are sitting stably on the seat of power will be very cautious to censor or prevent any kind of activities, new laws that may shake their already grasped authorities. This is one of the reasons that some people believe the greatness of individuals cannot be judged by their contemporaries.
And another reason should lie in the definition of greatness itself and people's attitude toward this notion. It is hard to give a fasten or unanimous definition to a certain achievement of an individual to the whole society, some research brought breakthrough to a complicated problem at the same time it may raise some new troubles in that field; some research is aimed at the long run profits in the future cannot benefit its people at the moment; some achievements need a long-termed test to prove its feasibility. I think the last one have always been a crucial point that delay the recognition of the greatest person who may not lucky enough to live to the day that his accomplishments was completely accepted by the public. For instance, some paintings of Van Gogh were not regarded as valuable and priceless until century's later after his death.
However, there do exist lots of examples that the contemporaries hold the correct and valuable recognition of the would-be greatest people at their time. Newton, Sir Isaac, one of the foremost scientific intellects of all time, had been wildly accepted before his middle age as the most highly esteemed natural philosopher in Europe; all of the world witnessed the strong will and adequate policy of President F. D. Roosevelt during World War II; and no one today could refuse to confess the greatness of Bill Gate with his Microsoft empire. Evenmore, some contemporaries support the would-be greatest people to further accomplishments: Through his patronage, the Pope supported Michelangelo's great artistic works, while the monarchs of Europe immediately recognized Mozart's greatness by granting him their most generous commissions.
No matter it is contemporaries or the later generations, one thing should be sure, there are too much standard to evaluate the contribution of an individual to the society and too many criteria to define the greatness of a person, so we should keep a sober mind to give them the correct judgment and all this should be based on fairness, just and opening mind. Only by this way, humans' brilliant civilization can be successfully continued.
