TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 469          DATE: 2007-12-7 22:24:30

What are the sufficient conditions to evaluate a person either contemporary or afterward? Can the greatness of individuals be only decided by those who live after them? Admittedly, in some areas, especially the arts, it always took decades or even centuries for people to realize the true great value of individuals. Yet, in my view, in some other areas, such a long history is not needed.

One example that supports the author's assertion is that many great figures died in obscurity in the field of art and literature. Vincent Van Gogh, the great Dutch painter whose influence on the outcome of art has been amazing and overwhelming sold only one painting in his life. Van Gogh's paintings that represent the people's real innermost feelings had not been recognized even after his death because few people understood the artistic conception of his paintings at that time. It was not until the twentieth century did his paintings prove to be success, which is not in his lifetime.

However, I concede the speaker is correct on limit areas. While focus on the art, at the same time we should pay attention to some achievements that is easy to recognizable. For example, in the realm of business, a common standard to judge whether a businessman is successful or not is the possession he owns. Whereas the argument that Microsoft's monopoly could be unfavorable to the development of software industry, there is no doubt that Bill Gates, as the richest man in the world, is recognized as a great businessman.

In addition, similar to the businessman, athletes are easy to be recognized as well. Carl Lewis, who won nine gold medals in the Olympic Games is considered to be one of the greatest athlete in the twentieth century. Even though he is no longer young enough to run as fast as before, all his achievements would be memorized by the whole world the moment he crossed the finishing line first. Besides, the basketball fans all over the world would never forget the last shot that won Michael Jordan the sixth NBA champion when he was at the age of 35. And I am sure that his fourteen years' excellent career life had already kept his greatness everlasting in the contemporary fans' minds.

To sum up, since there is no single standard that can be in common use to evaluate the greatness of individuals, we should not assert all the achievements can be decided by contemporaries or not. Obviously, all the cases leads to a sound conclusion that for some people whose work is hardly to be understood by others in his lifetime,  the followings would give their comment. While some other people would enjoy the greatness of their own when they are alive because there are clear evidences to convince the others to recognize their success.

Van Gogh's paintings that represent the people's real innermost feelings (这个有依据的对吧?)had not been recognized even after his death because few people understood the artistic conception of his paintings at that time. It was not until the twentieth century did his paintings prove to be success, which is not in his lifetime(这里改成多少多少年以后这样是不是更强调一点).

However, I concede the speaker is correct on limit areas. While focus on the art, at the same time(前面有while了,这个就不用了吧?)we should pay attention to some(those) achievements that is(are) easy to recognizable(动词). For example, in the realm of business, a common standard to judge whether a businessman is successful or not is the possession he owns. Whereas the argument that Microsoft's monopoly could be unfavorable to the development of software industry, there is no doubt that Bill Gates, as the richest man in the world, is recognized as a great businessman.(这一段钱赚的多就是成功商人没错,但是不是跟题目的“伟人”之间有概念区别?

In addition, similar to the businessman, athletes are easy to be recognized(是不是可以换个词了?) as well. Carl Lewis, who won nine gold medals in the Olympic Games is considered to be one of the greatest athlete in the twentieth century. Even though he is no longer young enough to run as fast as before, all his achievements would be memorized by the whole world the moment he crossed the finishing line first.(这句好) Besides, the basketball fans all over the world would never forget the last shot that won Michael Jordan the sixth NBA champion when he was at the age of 35. And I am sure that his fourteen years' excellent career life had already kept his greatness everlasting in the contemporary fans' minds.

To sum up, since there is no single standard(这两词连一起有专属义,建议改成common standard or unitive standard) that can be in common use(used) to evaluate the greatness of individuals, we should not assert all the achievements can be decided by contemporaries or not. Obviously, all the cases leads to a sound conclusion that for some people whose work is hardly to be understood by others in his lifetime,  the followings would give their comment. While some other people would enjoy the greatness of their own when they are alive because there are clear evidences to convince the others to recognize their success.

What are the sufficient conditions to evaluate a person either contemporarycontemporarily or afterward? Can the greatness of individuals be only decided by those who live after them? Admittedly, in some areas, especially the arts, it always took decades or even centuries for people to realize the true great value of individuals. Yet, in my view, in some other areas, such a long historylong time evaluation比较好吧) is not needed.

One example that supports the author's assertion is that many great figures died in obscurity in the field of art and literature.(有点像argu的句子少用吧,把author’s assertion改成 my opinion可能会好点)Vincent Van Gogh, the great Dutch painter whose influence on the outcome of art has been amazing and overwhelmingsold only one painting in his life. Van Gogh's paintings that represent the people's real innermost feelings had not been recognized even after his death because few people understood the artistic conception of his paintings at that time. It was not until the twentieth century did his paintings prove to be success, which is not in his lifetime.

However, I concede the speaker is correct on limit areas(用的很怪). While focus on the art, at the same time we should pay attention to some achievements that is easy to recognizable. Whereas the argument that Microsoft's monopoly could be unfavorable to the development of software industry, there is no doubt that Bill Gates, as the richest man in the world, is recognized as a great businessman.
