TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 435 TIME: unlimited DATE: 2007-12-08
Whether an individual is great or not heavily reckons on what he or she does as well as the perspective and prejudice of others. Some individuals may be objectively appraised by their contemporaries. At the same time, some people can solely be estimated by their offspring due to some limited factors, confined conditions, and the specific era background.
As time passing by, it is more easy and credible for us to make a judgement that whether individuals are the greatness or not because many disputations and doubts could be clarified, verified or rerecognized by time. In all ages, many celebrities build grand careers with great efforts in their lives, most of which can not be appraised objectively by their contemporaries. Because most gifted minds and sparkling ideas transcend the understanding of contemporaries and go beyond general cognitive ability at that time. Polish astronomer and mathematician Copernicus, who was an advocate of the point of view that an Earth in daily motion around its axis and in yearly motion around a stationary sun, which deeply altered later workers' concept of the universe whereas was rejected by the Catholic church at his age. In the same way, the achievements of clone technology at the present age, which is one of the most hotspot fields in the life science research, will be evaluated by the next generations.
However, the objectivity and impartiality of the estimates made by later generations may contain uncertainties likewise. To some degrees, each age has its own unique characteristics, which deeply influences on the way of thinking and the life value concept of individuals. Immaturely considering the special background of that period of time our forefathers live in, it is fully possible that they make hasty conclusions by their own value criteria.
We can do appraisement merely relying on all sorts of history records and documents, whereas their integrality and authenticity might have some impact on the accuracy and objectivity of the judgement. For a period of time, most individuals put up John Von Nouma as the father of computer; however, this sort of perspective is somewhat a mistake result from inaccurate information. Frankl, his assistant in the same laboratory at one time, once said that Von Nouma laid stress on the point that the essential concept of computer belongs to Alan Mathison Turing while on the contrary, he can be rightly called a midwife.
In conclusion, the standpoint puts forward by the author is oversimplified. Therefore, contemporaries can make objective appraisement for the greatness of an individual. Nevertheless, in other cases, just offspring can make the judgement on an individual justly and impersonally. |
