TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 430 TIME: unlimited DATE: 2007-12-09
Scandal, which occurs in various fields of our society, can be viewed as a special incident that might not only have an impact on individuals involved but also come into being a series of related sequences for some aspects. Indeed, both sides can be brought about by these scandals: positive and negative.
In normal society, the well-balanced supervision system always exists blind areas more or less because of unsound legal system or the existence of certain privileges. In some sense, the disclosure of scandals benefits our society and makes us find out some facts that we can not obtain from other ways while speakers or reformers must take their responsibility accordingly in public affairs. A love affair between the former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, and Monica Lewinsky was disclosed by the media several years ago. And it takes a great impact on the political career and life of Clinton even the whole political circle of the United States.
However, If the purpose of scandals disclosure is only to meet curiosity of the masses, or to become the trace investigation for the private life of so-called celebrities, or to be the speculation of public opinion for the mistake of government policy and to make the effects on news and society, it is fully possible to shake our confidence of the social justice and equality and to undermine the trustworthiness and security each other, and even endanger the stabilization of our society. To some degrees, scandals confuse us from time to time and make us be more aware of the blame rather than of their contribution.
Sometimes, we must be on the alert and take the right attitude for the scandals for fear of believing blindly and doing harm to others. Scandals, which derive from insiders of various channels and relate to politics, academia, physical training, or other fields, have diverse intentions that we, as outsiders, do not know well in general. The super basketball star, Michael Jordon, once was reported by the media for many times about his bad habit of gambling and his disloyalty in marriage. This scandal hurt him extremely and seriously smirched his reputation. People turned their attention to his disadvantages rather than his achievements and the contributions for basketball. Therefore, we should doubt the authentically of these scandals at times and keep our minds open and sharp.
All in all, we should assess the effects of scandals in all the aspects justly and impartially. Some scandals can play an active role in society while others may take passive impact on individuals or the community.
