*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.  

Does the critic really not leave anything to our society? As for me, I strongly agree with the speaker's basic assertion that the artist do contribute enduring value to our society, however, I also live under the idea that critic play an vital role in both our culture and society.

  There is no denying that art is an indispensable part of our daily life. When we read a famous novel in our leisure time, we are not only relaxing or killing time, but communicating our thoughts and emotions with the writer interactedly(mutually), which could promote our spiritual(mental) extent and render our experience abundant. Take Haminwei's novel--<old man and sea> for example, the old man who leads a miserable life and only lives on fishing doesn't give up his own belief, moreover, he still maintain the constant hopes and struggle with life, with fate. People that are in margins could learn many instructive lessons from how the old man faces to the difficulties.

  In addition, art not only tell us how to over come troubles, but make us daily life colorful and animated, as well. I think a lot of great names such as Dafenci(达芬奇--Leonardo da，Vinci), Mikalangilo（米开朗基罗—Michelangelo）etc. would strike into most people's brains at the mere mention of 文艺复兴(Revival of learning) period in Europe. Especially in Italia, there are nowadays still a great number of invaluable works created by those prominent elitists. Consequently, thousands upon thousands of tourists from all around the world are attracted to see such a great cultural art inheritance of hundreds of years ago. What's more, it is to say that the art works in Italia not only make the country famous in the world, but also sparks a boon to the growth of Italian economy.

  On the other hand are two compelling reasons that illustrate the value of critic. In the first place, it is undoubted that some works of the greatly famous artists are not so easy to understand or even abysmal. So the critics are needed to give their comments and ideas on these works, which could help the average people comprehend and catch the main content. As a result of different critics would hold variant assertions, common people would pick up different assertions according to their own needs. And what's more, the more communication between one and another, the more favorable ideas would be created.

  In the second place, the art need improvement and progress, so the beneficial comments and critics are indispensable, which would contributes directly to the art development. Artists get enough information about their works from critics and know what is to be improved and how to make it perfectible. Learning beneficial lessons from the comments would arise to great progress in art, furthermore, to produce more valuable works for the common people.

  To sum up, artists are great enough to give something of enduring merits, but critics who exert favorable and positive effects on art shouldn't be forgotten as well. If artists want to make great progress and art programs need improvement, they could not be torn apart from the critics. In a word, the two are intertwined as an organic integration,   what's more, they both play a essential role in society and people's life.

1.作者的主题---artist--gives society something of lasting value--(前者)在basic上,however(后者)---critic play an vital role in both our culture and society.作者的重点在后者.
2.上述第二及第三自然段只是向我们描述了两件事情---看不出与第一自然段的主题有什么关系,呵呵,纯个人观点.
3.critics--解惑--two compelling reasons 之一;
4.主题---beneficial comments and critics--directly--development.论据--Artists--get...and know...;Learning--arise--art progress--more...太悬了.是指paintings方面?还是整个art?说了那么多的好处----来个例子看看compelling.
