TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 502 DATE: 2007-12-14 1:16:09
提纲:
One way to judge whether scandals can be helpful is to see whether the political system, economical system, or other social systems can be advanced through the whole process. As far as I concerned, scandals can surely reveal some problems that cause unjustness and were hidden from the public, which means the existing problems can be exposed and the situation can be possibly improved. Yet sometimes people pay too much attention to the tiny details of scandals that neglect some aspects which are more important.
The primary reason why I agree with the author is that scandals help people to realize the deception of companies and make the market competition more purely and fairly in the realm of economics. Enron, one of the world's leading electricity, natural gas, and communications companies, was revealed that its financial condition report was planned accounting fraud continuously and systematically. The maximum amount bankrupt application in 2001 warned the Americans of financial corruption. And then, it is obvious that Enron could not create any superficial profit without the help of Merrill Lynch, JPM and Citibank, who supported Enron in hiding huge debt and evading tax revenues. Even more serious problems were disclosed in the scandal, which accelerated the reforming of market supervision. The SOX Act, which is also known as the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act, was signed into law seven months after Enron's bankruptcy.
Moreover, scandals can be helpful in facilitating political system reforming. The Watergate, one of the most influential scandals in the United States, has become a milestone in the history of human civilization. Thanks to the work of two reporters from the Washington Post, the investigations into Watergate not only led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon, but also roused the public to struggle with political corruption. From this point of view, Watergate is a symbol which places the understanding and expectation to the freedom of press, democratic system and legal society. Due to this scandal, the American Constitution and political values were reevaluated, and preventing the abuse of political power had become one of the core values of Americans.
Admittedly, scandals lend us a hand to settle the hiding problems, yet the improvement is based on comprehensive understanding and integral analysis to a scandal rather than focus on a specific section. For example, when Bill Clinton was clouded by the sexual scandal with Monica Lewinsky, some people gave more notice to the argument about whether there was a "sexual relationship" than the credit, responsibility, and obligation of a president.
To sum up, whether scandals can be helpful or not depends on the ways in which we deal with them. If we could find the inner problems rather than the appearances of scandals, and went on to chase better solutions that make up the defects of certain social systems, the scandals would be really helpful. Otherwise, it would be meaningless if we focus our attention on scandals just for fun instead of trying to reveal and resolve the problems.
