The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale

% |( `7 e5 F: Z* _7 |interview.  Each year I interview a number of young
& K8 w! ~2 T/ Z5 t. I$ _1 rpeople in North China who are applying for admission
to Yale as undergraduates.  

The interviews must be completed by the end of
February.  I would like to conduct a few interviews
before the onset of Chunjie; the rest will take place
in February, whenever convenient.

What I would like to find out today is whether you are
available for an interview in the days before Chuxi.

Normally I spend about 45 minutes talking with each
, t( h/ K' d) A/ @+ Rapplicant in my flat.  This is a relaxed conversation
5 [4 F5 |+ Q6 bfor which there is no 憄reparation?  The interview is
) N) S+ [2 s+ [& Q1 q7 N$ |not a test. You can bring a few documents if you wish,
though I am more interested in you as a person than as
an 慳chiever?

; D. I4 Z5 W# z) qI live on the campus of the Zhongguo Dizhi Daxue in
4 Q" R) _/ W, s$ G) EHaidian.  Our main gate, i.e. the north-central gate,
5 _, W# ^& u0 N) V5 zis opposite the main south gate of the Beijing Yuyan
Wenhua Daxue (or Yuyan Xueyuan, or Beiyu).  From the
0 C3 Z- Z, C/ p8 Inorth-central gate, proceed about 200 meters south,
9 x6 {+ d% Y4 J8 U* ~till you come to a major crossroads; Dormitory 9 will
" n- \5 h9 V1 `7 w- H! [be on your right.  At the corner, turn right and
( X' c5 l( n) c/ @proceed about 300 meters. I live in Building 38, Flat
153.  Building 38 is a new six-floor structure that
you will see on your left, inside an area with a black
metal fence and its own gateway. The building is
6 T  x, i: m7 X; b8 G! b8 rpainted pale yellow and dark pink.  My telephone
number, in case you have any trouble finding the
place, is 8232-7485.

If you are coming from outside Beijing, the important
* T& Q$ c- k, R. Mthing to know is that the campus is in Haidian Qu, in
the outer northwestern part of Beijing, about a
( v* w$ O5 Q4 o. e1 @9 Zkilometer east of Qinghua University.  To get here,
0 O( a8 a+ y3 y' R9 [/ k! Rtell your taxi driver to take you to the south gate of
the Yuyan Xueyuan [the Beijing Language Institute].
Mention Wudaokou, the nearby market area.  The south
! Y, U% t% ]% N" s# F  l; S- ygate of the Yuyan Xueyuan and our north gate are both
2 y2 j( k* s5 h6 G3 O* L- _- Z" {- Pon Chengfu Lu (cheng2fu3).  You can also get here by
! e5 O* V8 G- C5 Ftaking the new light rail line (qinggui) from Xizhimen
underground station to Wudaokou station and then
) O6 R0 |3 _5 C) Z$ S9 h- u# {walking east on Chengfu Lu till you come to our
$ g, e5 J7 u$ u* _" wnorthwest or north-central gate, which will be on your
right.
