TOPIC: ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
WORDS: 424 TIME: unlimited DATE: 2007-12-17
Outline:
1. We should keep the balance between intellectual and non-intellectual skills.
2. People always put excessively stress on the intellectual skills instead of non-intellectual ones.
3. Non-intellectual skills can take a significant supplement to intellectual skills.
Nowadays, with the coming of information age, mass data is pouring into our daily life so as to discriminate available from useless difficultly. However, intellectual skills, that is, the people’s reasoning and cognitive abilities at present, have not been undermined or impaired, for which the enormous achievements in development of science and technology just offer a strong support. Moreover, people always overlook the nurturance of certain non-intellectual skills, such as emotions and art. We should keep the balance between the both sides for all-around development.
Along with the competitions of our modern society being fierce more and more, people always put excessively stress on the intellectual skills instead of non-intellectual ones. Admittedly, in most cases, survival is the first and foremost problem for us to take into account. Having a good job and getting considerable salaries does offer the essential guarantees of our living standards. In order to achieve these goals, the excellent intellectual skills are the necessary conditions. There are all sorts of forms of education, including degree education and non-degree one, which are just to meet the demands of the broad education markets. Not far from it! As for art, imagination, emotions and so forth, they always play a small part in reality and cannot take effect in a short time. That is why we more emphasis on intellectual skills rather than non-intellectual ones.
However, we should not unilaterally magnify the role intellectual skills play and neglect non-intellectual skills to some extent. Actually, non-intellectual skills can take a significant supplement to intellectual skills. It is hard to imagine what kind of our society will be without art, literature, imagination, inspiration, intuition, and other non-rational factors. If not being well handled, they may bring about many social problems alike, and as the same time can produce a series of side-effects from family to society. Depression, dysfunction, and even mental or physical illness, all of which can severely harm an individual from psychology to physiology, are not seldom seen nowadays. Every year, there are many teenagers and young adults to choose suicide all over the world by the reason of the intolerance of high study or work pressure and certain hidden mental illness.
In sum, the perspective that our society should lay emphasis on intellect, involving reasoning and cognition abilities, is somewhat superficial. We should have a correct attitude to deal with the relationship between “science” and “art” in a proper way, and have better seek a balance point between intellectual and non-intellectual skills, which can ensure the sound progress of our society best.
