Issue141 [0806G-desperado小组]第八次作业by ancia

ISSUE141 - "Most people recognize the benefits of individuality, but the fact is that personal economic success requires conformity."

Does personal economic success require conformity?

Does personal economic success require conformity? In my view, it is definitely easier for conformists to achieve economic success in certain areas of business world, particularly in traditional service industries. Yet, the odds of success is much higher for non-conformists when it comes to consumer-driven or technology industries which entail creativity and differentation. In fact, to be a conformist or non-conformist relies on the specific conditions.

In the traditional industries such as insurance ,finance, post service and health care where business activity is constraint by sorts of regulations, policies and rules, it is the conformists who stick to the rules that tend to win the game. Disobeying these rules, the iconoclast always finds itself in trouble and thereby loses game although they are never short of innovative ideas.

However, conformity blocks outbursts of new ideas which play a vital role in business life in consumer-driven and technology industries. Non-conformist, creative and insightful, tends to be more successful in these areas. For example, vendors who first sell counter-season vegetables or fruit—watermelon in winter for instance—in much higher price than common ones do reap the rewards from their bold ideas and new biotechnology, leaving conformists cast envious glances. Furthermore, this law prevails particularly in infant technology industry where most of the entrepreneurs nowadays learn to protect their intellectual property in the form of patent. When referring to the use of new technology with patent protection, those conformists can do nothing but pay high fees to the creative patent-owners within scores of years.

Admittedly, non-conformist inevitably take more risk than conformist as innovation always demands risky investment the revenue of which is unpredictable. And it is not realistic for individual or an enterprise to behave innovative in every battle in business arena as it takes more money or human resources than they could afford. So why not conform to the sensible rules or learn lessons from others for so many alternatives have been proved effective or ineffective? For instance, the design of a product may be so innovative and creative that it must be a blockbuster even the marketing of which is performed in a relatively conventional but effective way such as by posters or television advertisement instead of racking one’s brains to work out a novel marketing strategy. What is more, many successful non-conformists with enough risk-tolerance gain their first drum of gold by conformity, but labeled non-conformists for their innovative products. In this sense, non-conformists do not necessarily refuse conformity and more or less they benefit from conformity which propels innovations and creativity indirectly.

In conclusion, conformity can benefit individuals in traditional industries but has a negative impact in customer-driven and technology industries. Despite so many benefits to be a non-conformist in certain conditions, it is advisable to conform to sensible rules or learn lessons from predecessors in order to spare time or money and shun needless twists and turns.

(这段似乎还可以补充一点,比如说解释一下为什么win the game, 或者为什么会失败,具个实例就更好了)
