TOPIC: ARGUMENT216 - The following appeared in a magazine article about planning for retirement.

"Because of its spectacular natural beauty and consistent climate, Clearview should be a top choice for anyone seeking a place to retire. As a bonus, housing costs in Clearview have fallen significantly during the past year, and real estate taxes remain lower than those in neighboring towns. Nevertheless, Clearview's mayor promises many new programs to improve schools, streets, and public services. Retirees in Clearview can also expect excellent health care as they grow older, since the number of physicians in the area is far greater than the national average."

The argument is well-presented, but not well-reasoned. By making a comparison the place, Clearview with slighter economic load and more physicians then consequently  more reasonable to choose, with other places, the vicinity areas higher cost and less physicians then subsequently less reason to live. The arguer concludes that Clearview should be the best choice for retirement. The argument about such a recommendation seems logical.

However, the article is a one-sided argument about the lower real estate taxes than nearby towns. The argument mentioned that the real estate taxes has fallen significantly over the past years, but whether it would still fall in the following year? Without more details have been offered, one is unreasonable to infer the situation of the next year. For that matter, it is entirely possible that the taxes will rise sharply in the coming year even override the neighboring towns if that it is not a wisely decision for choosing Clearview. Additionally, although the real estate taxes are lower that those in nearby towns, other taxes of Clearview do not inform clearly to us, thus, it is hard for people to determine whether the total taxes cost in Clearview is lower than vicinity towns.

The arguer overweights the mayor's promises. From the mayor's promises, we almost could see a good blue-print of Clearview. No one can deny that if it is finished, it will be a well-planed and attractive place. But turning to reality, these are only promises which mean whether act or not still a problem. If the local government confronts some financial problem, these projects would not be completed as expected. Or even these projects are completed in the next year, whether these actions will undermine the life style of the town which is far away from modern life and back to peaceful small town life is still unknown. New schools which the retirees are not interest in or wilder streets or modern public buildings are bound to influence the scene of the town. For that matter, some people who choose Clearview because of its original life style will leave.

The argument about " Retirees in Clearview can also expect excellent health care as they grow older, since the number of physicians in the area is far greater than ..." is easily arguable. No any firm evidence can suggest that more physicians could improve people's health significantly or they can cure every kind of disease which trouble people in town. Number is not only index of evaluating the condition of health care, the quality of physicians and the equipment are also very important. Besides, the number of Clearview's physician is more than national average, but it not indicate that it is more than nearby towns. For that matter, it is too hasty to conclude Clearview is the best choice for retirees.

Overall, the reasoning behind choosing the Clearview as the best retirement place seems logical as present above since the arguer is acting on his own best and want to boost the town. However, before any final decision has been made out, one should evaluate all the possible alternatives and cause for choosing Clearview as a retirement place compare to other place.
