The speaker asserts that today is so much new and complex that it is of no use in providing guidance for living in the present when consulting an understanding of the past. I agree that today’s world is becoming more complicate and unpredictable which sometimes renders a confusion anxiety and even fright among people. However, I don’t think looking back for advices and solutions in history proves useless, on the contrary, an understanding of the past serves a helpful guide for living in the present. Meanwhile, independent innovation and discovery are also required and we should not rely on the experience and knowledge in the past blindly.

In the first place, looking back for an understanding of the past provides precious experience and knowledge summarized by antecedent which is handed down from one generation to another to help us to analyze and solve the similar difficulties we confront in the present. With the rapid progress and changes in every respect of today’s world, the status quo becomes more complex for political leaders and legislators to analyze the whole perspective and make the appropriate policy or laws. In this case, seeking for advices and solutions in history works an effective way to deal with the similar problems in the present. For example, in Depression, it is by absorbing the experience of the past cases and adapting the principles of the macro-economy accumulated during a long time of history that President Franklin Roosevelt could lead Americans go to a brilliant future through the crisis of high rate of unemployment inflation and serious famine. If there is no experience and antecedent we can consult, we probably spend amount of time working out a stratagem and even end in a failure. An understanding of the past indeed gives us a hand to overcome many problems.

An understanding of the past also promotes the development of science and technology. It can provide critical thinking, scientific methods, and valid direction all of which are requisite in science research and experiments. The accomplishment of the former scientists serves a stead step stone and guarantees the progress and success of the later scientists. For instance, the prestigious physicist Isaac Newton discovered and deduced the first law of Newton kinetics on the basis of the experiments devised by Galileo. It is the acquired contribution of Galileo to the kinetics as if were a beacon that illuminate a correct way for Newton to follow. What is more, there are numerous illustrations demonstrating that with combination of the inspiration elicited by predecessors and scientists’ individual efforts, they made a great success. From this point, the more profound we understand the past, the more achievements we will gain in the present.

Nevertheless, we should not overemphasize the effectiveness of referring to the past and not imitate the experience or measures mechanically without discrimination. Completely copying the history may pose a counterproductive effect on the development of society. The reform of economic regime of China is such a typical example. In 1950s, when People’s Republic of China was just founded, the leaders decided to adapt the planned economy of Soviet Union directly without wide and considerable enough investigation. Although the decision worked for a period, yet it ultimately turned out to be a culprit that prohibits the pace of development of economy and even cause retrogress from 1960s to 1970s. It was not until implement the policy ‘reform and opening up’ devised by Deng Xiaoping-a famous leader of China- in late 1980s China moved onto an express way of developing at a high speed. The fact indicates that the right economic regime of China is market-economy rather than planned-economy so as to precipitate the economy of China to take off. On the other hand, we should also stress independent thinking and innovation, for they are indispensable at any time in order to impel the development of society. Looking back to the past, none of the great events, trends and revolutions were acquired with no innovation but experience of past along. Therefore neither the understanding of the past nor reliance on our originative competence could take effect solely in promoting the development of society.

In sum, although today’s world is so much complex and new, an understanding of the past is still valuable. It provides guidance for living in the present such as promoting the science progress and conducting the political leaders to make effective policies. At the same time, we should make sure that we cannot mechanically copy the antecedent in the history without discerning analysis and selective utilization. Only through connecting the understanding of the past with the man’s innovation and endeavor, we can arrange and lead a blissful living in the present.
