Argument 234

The author advises that for the sake ofhealthier and longer lives people should choose to the relaxed manner of livingin small towns rather than big cities. To support the advice, the authorprovides comparisons of report number of sick leave’s days, the number ofphysicians per thousand people, and the average age between the small town of Leeville and the large city of Mason city. This argument is vulnerable inseveral aspects.

The fact that report number of sick leave’sdays in the small town is fewer does not ensure that the actual number is so. Perhapsthe small town of Leevilleloosens the management of businesses, many workers who stay away from work forsick did not be reported. As a consequence, the report number is incredible, maybe the actual number of sick leave’s days in the small town is much higher, since workers in large city have better food supply and better entertainment toimprove their mood.

Another fact that the number of physiciansper thousand people in Mason Cityis higher lends no strong support to higher percent of illness but account fora better level of medical treatment. In my observation, higher level of medicaltreatment in large city is normal for the high-speed economic development oflarge cities. And, the less number of physicians in Leeville does not convincethat people there are healthier, perhaps the truth is the town lacks enoughphysicians so that people have to see a doctor in another city.

Last but not least, the fact that theaverage age in Mason Cityis lower than in Leeville says nothing about living in small town is longer andhealthier. The average age merely expresses that people lives in Mason City areyounger than people in Leeville at the same time, there are several reasons toexplain this condition: perhaps in large city of Mason City, company employs agreat many of the young instead of the old to work, or perhaps the old findliving in countryside are more interesting therefore they move out of the city,or young people lives in small town have to search more fun hence they moveinto the city to enjoy entertainment. In my opinion, the author should use theaverage age of a live instead to support this advice.

To sum up, the argument is notwell-reasoned. By the evidence provided by the author, we can not draw the conclusionsthat living in small communities are healthier.
