I agree with this statement wholeheartedly, itis exactly the artist gives the society long value with their extraordinarywork which not merely be the record of man but could be one of the props, thepillars to help it endure and prevail. As Schiller once said, art is the righthand of nature, the latter only gave us being, but the former made us men. The critic’scontribution can not even place on a par to the artist’s, especially mention tothe lasting value to the society.

Artis less important than life, of course, but what a poor life without art. Sincethe industry revolution made a gigantic effect on our need of material, we canpay more attention to spirit need. More and more people devote to the art, theessence of our culture, which dedicated the society value, not the only way buta very important one. Just as the modern industry serve us material need, surewe judge it, sometimes even critic it fierce, but we cannot deny that it provide us things which make sure most people live a basicfine life. So is the art, in some periods itwas abandoned or alienated, howeverin fact, it influence us on spirit all the time. Art may be attacked,criticized or ignored, but its contribution to the society value basically cannot be obliterated.

Thereare contradictions of critic’s contribution to art. Normally, the artconsidered helpful to people to understand and enjoy art, and sometimes, thecritic is an authority in judging the artist’s work, his evaluation of an artwork serves as filter, which help us determine which art is worth our time andattention. But on the other side, the critic should not be our teacher, becausethe appreciation of art occurs at the moment we encounter it, it is thevisceral impact on our emotion, spirit and soul, it is the real value of art. Acritic may actually provide a disservice by distracting us from that experience.And the function that of evaluation that filters out bad art from theworthwhile is that we must be very wary of. In the role of judge, critics havefailed us repeatedly, since the art critic’s judgment is limited by the narrowconfined of old and established parameters for evaluation, moreover, criticjudgment is usually misguided by the personal special love. After all, thefunctions of critic are not of much value, let alone of lasting value.

Insum, the artist, through works if art, provide an invaluable and uniquecontribution to the culture and people’s spirit need. Andcritics ina subordinate role, it is helpful in conveying these values to the publics, however not always benefit for people’s judgmentor art’s long value.
