TOPIC: ARGUMENT8 - The following appeared in a memorandum issued by the strategic planning department at Omni Inc.

"Mesa Foods, a manufacturer of snack foods that currently markets its products within a relatively small region of the country, has strong growth potential. Mesa enjoyed a 20 percent increase in profits last year, and its best-selling product, Diabolique Salsa, has had increased sales over each of the past three years. Since Omni Inc. is interested in reaching 14-to-25 year olds, the age group that consumes the most snack food, we should buy Mesa Foods, and concentrate in particular on marketing Diabolique Salsa throughout the country."

The article cites the facts that Mesa Foods (MF) has enjoyed a 20 precent increase in profits last year, and Diabolique Salse, its best-selling food, has had increased sales over last three years. From these facts the author reasons that MF has great growth potential, and then the article's author concludes that Omni Inc. should buy MF to increase the company's profits. This argument is flawed in several critical respects.

First of all, the article's author has not shown the facts upon which this argument depends to be reliable. The author has not supplied the practical profits of the MF company during last year, perhaps the 20 percent increase in profits is actually equal to mean a little money, because the profits of the MF company are too little during several last years. And the consecutive increasing sales in last three years have not also meant that MF's products have a great profit and maintain the increasing profits in the further. Otherwise the author cannot draw any firm conclusion that the MF company has strong growth potential.

Secondly, the author's argument depends on the assumption that the MF products can be popular in the 14-to-25 year olds who consumes the most snack food. Yet this is unnecessarily in the case. Perhaps the people in this age group hate the MF's products and cannot also suffer from the strange smell of the food, especially Diabolique Salsa. If so, the article's author would overstate the possible profits from buying MF company and marketing Diabolique Salse.

Finally, even assumption that the MF's products might be popular in the 14-to-25 ages, the author implicit the claim that Omni Inc. can have a great increasing profits by buying MF is without support. The author neglects the competition between the MF and other food manufactures which also produce the snack food. It is entirely possible that some special companies have the stronger growth potential and greater increasing profits in the last several years. And the author also neglects to consider about the cost of buying MF and producing the MF products. Without any better evidences that buying the MF can get more benefit and profits from the market, it might be a folly to follow the author's recommendation.

In sum, the argument relies on several poor assumptions and is therefore unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen it the editorial's author must provide clear evidences that the MF company has stronger growth potential than others, and that people in14-to-25 year olds would like the MF's snack food, especially Diabolique Salse. The author must also show that Omni Inc. can get the greater profits though buying MF company obviously than buying other companies.
