TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

According to the speaker, scandals--no matter where it emerges from-- politics, academia, or other areas can be useful, because they focus our attention on problems where no speaker or reformers ever reach. Although I concede the point mentioned above, in more cases scandals will rouse unpleasant aftermath beyond the advantage it has gained, that means useful but helpless.

Speaking in some extent, finding out the scandals lying beneath the attention of public is a good thing, which can build up an intense awareness of the deficiency in the regulation system, and to improve the system. Such kind of conduction exists in many areas. For example, after revealed plagiarizing others’ novel works, the author of last year best seller was badly shamed and punished by nation’s regulators and another item about strictly restricting the publishing action has been put out immediately. And the corruption events in the higher level of corporations alarm frequently in recent years, pushing government to accelerate the course of the innovation of contemporary law structure.

However, scandals do not always have a satisfying performance in everyday life, work office, or other places, sometimes the damage raises from them would unpredicted preponderate over the benefit of regulation improvement mentioned before. Any scandal from government would more or less beget panic, horror and disturbance in the whole society. Imagine if an official who was involved in a feigned accounting scandal was disclosed, public would in all likelihood cast suspicion to the information and the achievement about the government, as a result of that, all policies and regulations in use lose the original powerful effect. If even worse, the subject of the scandal is a leading person--mostly a decision-maker--after being removed from the position, what he has actualized, not only policies, administrations but projects would be replaced by the latter successor. If that is true, how many years has to be paid to adjust the recent policy system to the newly leader’s, I am afraid no one can give an exact answer to that.

Moreover, in some extremely cases there is always someone overstate or even make up the whole story on malignant purpose, to attain some particular aims. We cannot find any examples here more appropriate than those in political elections. Almost in every election, the weaker campaigners are always busy defaming the opponent by revealing scandals, weak points, and so on, through which public might be mislead and distrust the real stronger. From the famous literature works RUN FOR GOVERNOR by Mark Twain we can easily pry into the reality of such the election. Whether or not you have done something shameful in fact, after others’ continuous disseminations, it would become truth in everybody’s eyes, at least in a certain period time. I dare not to say the ultimate winner is less competent than some loser, however, maybe some truly able men have been covered by dummy scandals, which is the very truth.

In sum, scandals always perform differently in different cases-- in different times, at different places, in different domains, or even between different parties- so we must be cautious when facing them, confirm the facticity first, and decide either to believe and use the scandals or to underestimate even overlook their existence in some certain occasions.

总体觉得论证有些单薄要是再多一个角度可能会更好些, 结尾第一句有些重复了,可以简单一些.长句用的比较多,有些会产生歧义.

185"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
words:542

With the development of technology and civilization, more and more exposure of scandals is reported by media. So are these scandals beneficial for our society as the argument asserts? I agree that scandals can be useful in many cases to reveal the inner problem of community or society. Nevertheless, some scandals schemed to attract public attentions are always insignificant and meaningless and scandals even could distract too many attentions and energy from public so that some more important issues are ignored.

On the one hand, it is undisputable that scandals could call public attentions to some political and academic problems which are easily ignored or concealed from public. The problems will come out with the exposure of scandals, therefore we can make efforts to solve them in order to make progress. The persuasive modern example is the Watergate scandal, which the Nixon government spares no effort to conceal from public at first. Since the scandal has caused wide public concern, the illegal activities are exposed leading to the retirement of the former president. Ultimately, this affair enhances the scrutiny of government behavior by public, which benefits the society. Another example is falsity by a famous professor in Shanghai JiaoTong University in china. This kind of academic falsity, which is so professional that only a few experts can figure out, always would be omitted by public. But, when it was revealed as a scandal, the public concern will result in the thorough examination of the false behavior. It is useful for scandal to function of surveillance on many areas of society, in which way the reformer or speaker could not do.

On the other hand, no one can deny the fact that some scandals are schemed to attract public attention on purpose, which is useless or even harmful for society. As I know, in entertainment industry, it is even considered to be a shortcut to enhance one's popularity. Just like the superstar Britney Spears, she has divorced twice. It is ridiculous that one of her marriages maintained only 51 hours. And the singer Janet Jackson bared her breast in nationwide performance. These behaviors call public attention only for utilizing people's curiosity. Nothing they are about the society. Furthermore, it is expressing a false idea that people can pay any moral price in order to obtain wealth and popularity, which is no worse. Therefore, we should refuse to pay attention to those useless or even harmful scandals.

In addition, in some cases, scandals can call too many attentions from public, which causes less public energy on other urgent or significant aspects. For example, not long ago, there was a school shooting in Virginia Tech University, which shocked the whole America and even the universities in other nations. All new development of this matter causes wild public concern. Many preventive methods are provided by various people. But, when comforting those families of death, we think less about the shooter and his family, who are also victims in this affaire.

In sum, scandal is like a two-blade sword, which can not only contribute to perfecting the social system and supervising the social and political behavior, but also is of no use, even do harm to society. However, all of these lies on how we treat scandals.

第一篇issue 比较烂

As the statement suggests, scandals in politics, academia, or other areas are useful and can draw our attention on problems. As far as I am concerned, although some of the scandals mean little to our society, most of them can focus our attention on our social problems, stimulate us to think about social issues and help the society to solve our social problems.

Some say that some of the scandals do not play an important role in our society because these scandals, such as those about the movie stars private lives, only satisfy our curiosity about the unknown part of others' lives. For example, quite a few youngsters are quite interested in the popular stars private lives. It is not unusual to see some kinds of magazines whose major topic is about the famous people's new activities, especially about the famous singers and the movie stars. And once there turns up a scandals relating to an extremely famous person nowadays, it will definitely be placed as the front-page news because it can catch the readers eyes. But these kinds of scandals only exits to satisfy the youngsters' motivates for searching for fun. They do not cause people to think critically about our social problems and change nothing important. As a result these scandals do not mean much to our society, they only provide us with a way to search for pleasure.

In spite of the fact that some of the scandals mean little to our society, it is true that most of the scandals can draw our attention on the social problems and stimulate us to think more critically and frequently about these pressing social issues. For example, about eight years ago, a student in Tsinghua University took a bottle of caustic reagent to a park and poured it to a bear only in order to prove that whether the reagent can injure the bear. After the media reported this scandal, people began to think more often and seriously about the method of education in China and try to come up with some ideas to improve the way in which parents, schools and even the whole society to educate the youngsters. As far as I see, most scandals can make us pay attention to our social problems and consider the condition of our politics, education, social security, and so on.

In addition, most scandals can reflect the serious social problems which are not easily exposed to our society unless some scandals reveal them and stimulate political or social reforms, and help the officials to solve these problems. For instance, in 2007, as soon as the scandal of the black brickkilns in Shan Xi, China was revealed by the media, a great number of citizens in China became outraged because of the cruel activities the owners of these brickkiln did. In this scandal, the owners of brickilns forced some children who were kidnapped to work for them in their brickkilns. If the children resisted, the owners would punish them in some extremely cruel way. From the day this scandal was revealed, lots of citizens were enraged by the cruelty done by the owners of the black brickkilns and the front-page news in most newspapers was about it. As a consequence, the officials in China took up a series of methods to cope with it, some of the owners were punished to death, others were taken into prison for more than 20 years, and the children alive in the brickkiln were all sent home and got paid. Were the scandals of black brickkilns not revealed by media, almost no citizens in China would know it and the black brickkiln would continue and the children there would go on to be abused. So I think scandals can reflect some serious social problems and help the officials the take steps to solve these problems.

I hold the belief that although there exits some scandals which do not mean much to our society, most of them can be useful for the reason that they draw our attention on the social issues, stimulate us to think critically and help our society to solve the social problems.

晚上刚报道,只写了Issue,其大家猛拍砖。
题目:ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be

ever could."

In general, I agree with the assertion that scandals can focus our attention on some problems that we might not pay attention to. Yet, in my view, it supports a ineffective way of settling a problem that exits. As discussed below.

First, I concede that scandals expose some facts that can't be seen in other ways for the speakers and reformers have to take responsibility for their public affairs. Then scandals are almost the only way to help us find problems and settle them. The Nixon's Watergate Affair is a classic instance in political realm. Without that the scandals had surfaced, the public could not pay such attention to the political problems from speakers and reformers. Another example is the scandal of football corruption, so-called "black whistle" in China, which is not made much account of before. Now the "Black Whistle" has drawn increasing attention.

Secondly, in my view, some scandals may draw the public's attention to some not-so-important issue while some other problems might be more pressing. For instance, the famous sex scandal of former president of America Bill Clinton is a case in point. Although Clinton is guilty in morality, the scandal is only the privacy of the former president. Furthermore, the large amount of the public resources which are spent on probing into the intimate details between Clinton and Lewinsky are wasted by Starr. The funds would be more beneficial to the world if they could be spent in helping the sick children in the Africa or otherwise be used for addressing the problems of the environment pollution and unemployment in America.

Thirdly, we should be avoid believing blindly in the reports about these scandals and be careful to establish the facts relating to them before making any judgments. For example, the most famous basketball star Michael Jordan was reported many times for many kinds of reason, such as his hobbit of gaming and his divorce, which we might regard as a very normal thing for ourselves. But it is not so normal for a famous star and it is only a conversation's topic for most people. However it may hurt the privy.

In the final analysis, I agree that scandals can focus our attention on some political or social problems which we can't see in other ways. However, query whether a scandal works in a effective way, or whether we can benefit from it.

改的tainy的

In general, I agree with the assertion that scandals can focus our attention on some problems that we might not pay attention to. Yet, in my view, it supports a ineffective way of settling a problem that exits. First, I concede that scandals expose some facts that can't be seen in other ways for the speakers and reformers have to take responsibility for their public affairs. (这句话写的好像有些问题啊)Then scandals are almost the only way to help us find problems and settle them. (这里需要一个乘上启下的话,尽管绯闻对于揭示事情的真想有所帮助,但是现代传媒更多的把注意力放在了一些。。。。。。。而这样不利于。。。。。)Secondly, in my view, some scandals may draw the public's attention to some not-so-important issue while some other problems might be more pressing. For instance, the famous sex(sexual) scandal of former (American) president of America Bill Clinton is a case in point. (这一段的例子说的不错)    (也是需要一个承上其下的句子,比如说,这样的问题不是一个两个,面对这样的问题,我们应该怎么办呢?。。。。) Thirdly, we should be avoid believing blindly in the reports about these scandals and be careful to establish the facts relating to them before making any judgments. For example, the most famous basketball star Michael Jordan was reported many times for many kinds of reason, such as his hobbit of gaming and his divorce, which we might regard as a very normal thing for ourselves. Issue:
Scandal is an incident involving allegations of wrong doings, disgrace, or moral outrage, that often publicized by the media. Paralleling[comparing是否更好?]  to its important function, calling public’s attention to important problems, we cannot deny [the fact that] time and capital are exhausted when scandals are produced simply to attract citizens’ eyeballs. Thus, to[去掉] publicizing scandal should be strictly limited within social-welfare consideration [后面显得冗余] to reveal controversial problems that society could address and solve.

If you are inclined to agreement my debate might seem like these further categories that, in which the importance of scandals, are efficiently analyzed.
I agree with the author that scandal often generates in the area of politics, academia, and other field. This is one aspect about my category: the specialization. In this field any publication of scandal is almost inefficient for the reason of time lag. Perhaps the paradigmatic modern example is the stem cell scandal publicized in 2005. Professor Hwang, sparklingly, his report was proved a largely discredited research with extract lines of embryonic stem-cell and [he was] later accused as traitor of Korea. In fact, under control of academic automation’s credit correction system, hwang was expelled days before becoming front- page news. Every scandal served only to prove the how wholesome and exquisite our academia system are, without any laic suggestion. So, no assets the public attention really contributes, neither the wrong doings are concealed or[nor] after it has been revealed in the area of specialization.
I can understand why people focus their attention on these specializations and maintain their interest with scandal for a long time. Even the attention might not actually help[这个不能单独成句吧,作为前面那句的从句吧]. Yes it is difficult to accept guidance of human culture is full of disloyalty, misdeed, and disgrace that naturally, civilians’ attentions are gathered in hoping a consensus agreement to save the faults.
The other aspect, in my opinion, that scandal might help lies in crossfire of family and occupation. Surely, scandal is always a frontier issue to our criterion of law, moral standards or theirs. And debate on these things is always appalling and interesting, or some might say ‘controversial’. For example, Hillary will tell females about the support and regards she gets after the exposure of Clinton [s] sex scandal. Admittedly, rumors from newspaper and husband’s disloyalty made her life tougher than ever. But formalism would be encouraged by her example, using power and right of law to defend their life, united to concerning women unequally treated. And maybe there are more court rulings about executive privilege and protection serves reasonable obligation in female. However, the scandal benefits nothing to country’s political, social, or legal system, no matter Clinton was the president or not. To quota what the author said[says更好],’ they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.’ not in the politics, academia or other specific and well-developed areas but the frontiers that we neglect for a long time.
Maybe [the fact] the discussion on sexual inequality, security crisis of people lies in social bottom has existed for a long period. The scandal about them gave us only gossips, moral standards, consensus graceful concern but of little practical actions. We should insist [on] addressing our limited social resources to form correct moral standards on the frontier spots.

TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 567          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2008-1-17 23:21:08

I partly agree with the author said in the issue that scandals may help us focus our attention on the problems in the ways that speaker or reformer to tell it out, however on the other hand scandals about certain topic may distract us from the more important works.

Admittedly, scandal is主谓一致 one of the biggest materials of the hot news flow on the communication channels, which take much attention of people who were interested by the scandals. As we all know scandals are usually about the famous or authority statues which makes the public pay attention on them. Why the newspapers' publishers or other media put it on is just because it has the energy to make some affection. As the issue said the scandals may be useful to make the people focus on the problems which are no speaker or departments to solve it when the problems it truly be the serious ones that worthy to discussed.

On the other hand, some scandals has no value to solve the social problems but only focus on the tiny detail mistakes or privacy made by the famous people. The public still pay much attention on these things which will makes them pay less energy on their own jobs. Taken the scandals of Clinton's sex scandals for example, of  course, it is not a honor to be a president with such accident but to be a great leader and makes right decision keeping the economy growing with a high speed is the president's main responsibility. The scandals irrelevant to the governmental issues were just a tool with which the opposite ones treat him. So that is a kind of waste the focus ones attention on these scandals.

In addition, dose it work if most people focus their attention on the problems? Uncertainty.这个地方不知道用什么 It was the authority power who can have the right and energy to change the situation that will help solving the problems. Without that, thought thousands of ordinary people focus on it, the problems will never be solved.
However, some things in our daily life makes support to the issues, take the campus life for example, if we find the cafeteria use bad vegetable to dish the dinner, the students will make it known by all of the university and some department manage the life serves will stand out level the anger students and punish the cafe. That is the way this scandals helpful. But when it comes to the huge ones that maybe relevant to the secrets of the nation then that will just be an accident perhaps the maker of the scandals will be punished by some other reason in the society under autocracy.

Finally, to everyone regardless the one is man or woman, high statues or have no penny, the scandals is a way to know one real aspect of the world tell us to keep alarm with something or someone. It is common to heart that a professor stolen the achievement made by his or her students without payment, for us students, this kind of scandals will make us keep attention on the professors and protect our patents.

To sum up, the scandals may help us focus our attention on the problems in the ways that speaker or reformer, at the same time we should tell the scandals which is worth to pay our attention, and which is valuable to discuss.

Nell 的issue by cheer

修改后改写:

Scandals are incidents that are negative to certain people related with certain issues. It may attract the public’s attention relatively easier and more effective partly due to people’s curiosity to others’ personal affairs and disgust to evil things.

Scandals are useful on some occasions. Officials' taking bribes from the companies to gain extra incoming been considered as the gray incoming may be exposed to the public through unofficial approaches. These are scandals. Then these affairs may attract the attention of the government and these illegal deals can be treated properly. Also other officials may be warned. Herein it plays just like the public opinion supervision. Sometimes many things that cannot be properly done through normal approaches may gain unexpected results through the means of scandals. For example, a student been unfairly treated by a leader who has private gratitude and resentment with him may appeal to clean up the fact to the public and get extra support, citizens be treated unfairly may appeal to the higher authorities for help. This is another style of scandal which can help the relative vulnerable groups to enjoy a fair condition. In this sense, we may believe that scandals are useful.

However, just like a coin has two opposite faces, the pessimistic influence of scandals cannot be overlooked. For a healthy continuous development of a society, scandals cannot be an effective means for long, and it is obviously that too much reliance on this means may lead the society’s development to an abnormal stretch. A healthy society should rely more on the normal means to gain justice to its citizens. In details, scandals sometimes are more harmful comparing with its effectiveness. Take the stars that may face more pressure because of scandals for example. As a person live in the public and earn his/her living by the public’s attention in some sense, they need to be noticed by the public to enjoy higher fame on one hand, but on the other hand, too much attention focused on their private affairs may put them in a situation of losing themselves, that is freedom. This may explain why there are so many stars indulged in taking drugs, though there may be some other causes, the pressure of so called scandals may play an unneglectable influence. Furthermore, even for those relative weak groups, it is better to solve the problem in a normal way or there will be a continuous abnormal procedures, this is according to the adage, nothing can be accomplished without norms or standards.

To sum up, scandals may be useful in certain occasions, and it does have more negative influences on daily lives. In order to enjoy a smooth operation,we may induce it properly to make scandals played as a supplement to the supervision mechanism and so on.

To 堕落

As the statement suggests, scandals in politics, academia, or other areas are useful and can draw our attention on problems. As far as I am concerned, although some of the scandals mean little to our society, most of them can focus our attention on our social problems, stimulate us to think about social issues and help the society to solve our social problems.(society和social有点意思重复,随便删一个)

Some say that some of the scandals do not play an important role in our society because these scandals, such as those about the movie stars private lives, only satisfy our curiosity about the unknown part of others' lives. For example, quite a few youngsters are quite interested in the popular stars private lives. It is not unusual(直接肯定不好么?) to see some kinds of magazines whose major topic is about the famous people's new activities, especially about the famous singers and the movie stars. And once there turns up a scandals relating to an extremely famous person nowadays, it will definitely be placed as the front-page news because it can catch the readers eyes. But these kinds of scandals only exits(exist) to satisfy the youngsters' motivates(motivate有名词意思么?) for searching for fun. They do not cause people to think critically about our social problems and change nothing important. As a result these scandals do not mean much to our society, they only provide us with a way to search for pleasure.

In spite of the fact that some of the scandals mean little to our society(感觉罗嗦,觉得不如直接however转折), it is true that most of the scandals can draw our attention on the social problems and stimulate us to think more critically and frequently about these pressing social issues. For example, about eight years ago, a student in Tsinghua University took a bottle of caustic reagent to a park(感觉多余) and poured it to a bear only in order to prove that whether the reagent can injure the bear. After the media reported this scandal, people began to think more often and seriously about the method of(不要,education就好了) education in China and try to come up with some ideas to improve the way in which parents, schools and even the whole society to educate the youngsters.(school educate sb 有点中文化了) As far as I see, most scandals can make us pay attention to our social problems and consider the condition of our politics, education, social security, and so on.

As a consequence, the officials in China took up a series of methods(action比较好) to cope with it, some of the owners were punished to death, others were taken into prison for more than 20 years, and the children alive in the brickkiln were all sent home and got paid(sentence, sentence and sentence 是一种并列的句式么?我认为句子直接一定需要连词连接。。。). Were the scandals of black brickkilns not revealed by media, almost no citizens in China would know it and the black brickkiln would continue and the children there would go on to be abused(这里abuse是滥用还是辱骂虐待的意思?我觉得你想说滥用把,但好像abuse+sb只能指虐待).

:handshake
说点无关的,那个山西的例子是煤窑吧,怎么成砖窑了?还是我搞错了?
