Do nonmainstream areas of inquiry serve as a significant part in society for it meet human needs that are not satisfied by mainstream science, as the author contends. From my personal angle, the latter assertion aptly illustrates what the nonmainstream functions in our society- to address some particular needs of people; however, I fundamentally oppose the former prediction that it plays a vital part in society for the simple reason that the disadvantages it presents offset, if not overweight, the advantages.

Admittedly, for quite a long time, nonmainstream areas of inquiry promote people's understanding of the world around them, or even of themselves, to provide a sort of sense of certainty or to satisfy curiosity of people. In primitive time, lacking adequate knowledge of the world, to explain the nature phenomenon, our ancient had to resort to such nonmainstream areas of inquiry. With its help, they tend to believe that all these are destined; therefore there is no need to worry about it as it is out of control. With the society processing, the upper class of the society require a forceful implement to control the public. Only with the nonmainstream areas, can they predominate their citizens in absence of weapon, keeping the society in peace.

Even in the modern time, such areas are in badly needed for some people. Those who find it elusive to explain relationships around them by science will possibly depend on nonmainstream areas. These areas of inquiry facilitate their world of imagination with the most convenient way to evaluate the world with little effort. In addition, those who always suffer from setbacks in daily life often, if not always, feel comfortable when the fortune-telling predicts that they will certainly gain much more in the near future. Only in this way, can they regain their confidence about life.

However, to make a conclusion on to what degree nonmainstream areas of inquiry benefit our society, the assumption should be brought to the vision of current time, by which I mean if these sorts of inquiries are indispensable in society as the speaker indicates, it should provoke the progress of society, or it is accepted by the majority of contemporary dwellers on earth. Given such a definition, nonmainstream areas of inquiry can hardly be viewed as important in our society.

First and foremost, it presents substantial amount of problems to people living modern time. Anybody in face of difficulties or challenges should probe in them to figure out the appropriate methods. However, those who believe in fortune will just prey instead of trying on his or her best to settle them, waiting these problems disappearing without any trace. Further, fortune-telling can also make people believe that all in the mundane world is up to destiny and that what left to those people is to take it because he or she is doomed to do so in that struggling amounts to fruitless. Providing such a kind of atmosphere in society, how could we predict that these nonmainstream areas of inquiry are beneficial to us.

Secondly, in a great sense, nonmainstream areas of inquiry are employed by desperate mobs that are aggressive, say, the terrorists. These inquiries become the tool of their mental ruling imposed on people, driving the normal people crazy. Those who are under their control, or rather under the control of nonmainstream areas will become brutal to everyone else, even their closed relations, to head for the paradise promised by the evil leaders. Unfortunately, although nonmainstream areas of inquiry do to intend to initiate the crime towards human beings, in fact, it does.

Further, people all are the combination of non-rational and rational part. It is natural for people to turn to those who can give psychological comfort to us for a rest in the arduous journey of life for a moment, but we have never forgotten that this kind of comfort can scarcely last for a long time and we should never.

To sum up, nonmainstream areas of inquiry does provide some people with psychological comfort; however, on the other hand, it brings out more harm to the society. We can never rely on it for good, and the gorgeous and promising future still lies in those so called mainstream areas.
