Issue41 "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."

I agree with the statement that nonmainsteam areas of inquiry satisfy human needs. However, the speaker unnecessarily extends this assertion to the social level, which could never play a vital role in the modern society.

One reason for my fundamental agreement with the speaker is that humans always need a guidance to tell them which way to choose when they faced an important but confusion fair. The astrology, fortune-telling and such nonmainstream areas of inquiry help people a lot at this moment. For instance, a person might have more confidence to do a certain business if the tarot cards tell that the business will successful. Additionally, to avoid guilt and regret, people want to have a right rule to follow, then, astrology comes to the aptly one to choose, since we lack the ability to know our future. Thus, I think this option is realistic.

Another reason why I essentially agree with the speaker is that nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as paranormal pursuits give people's soul comfort, which mainstream science can never do. After all, humans tend to feel extremely sorrow then the one we loved leave us forever. The notion of "afterlife" or "heaven" may have the effect to release these pains. So that people could start a new life less painful with the feeling that our loved one always stand by us. Moreover, the paranormal pursuits also let us less afraid from death by believing that humans will live a peaceful and rejoice life in another world.

Having recognized that nonmainsream areas of inquiry satisfy people a lot, these areas nevertheless can not play a vital role in the society. In my observation, amount of people regard the stars or the tarot cards as an entertainment or as and aid rule to help us made decision. For example, people who resort to fortune-telling might lost a good chance of business. Moreover, if these nonmainstream areas play an important role in society, people may have not got the passion to work hard, because people all believe that all the things are destiny. Society may change in the way which a few fortune-tellers want.

To sum up, we must concede in honest that nonmainstream areas of inquiry carries many beneficiaries to humans. However, it's illogically to extend this effect to the social level. Without any doubt, excessively researches and emphases on these areas create risk to all society.
