Viewing back the whole developed history of human beings , the nonmaninstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits influence life of people, however, it is no wise for us to more emphasis the effect and credible of nonmainstream science while ignore the profound influence producing by mainstream science for the whole society.
First of all, the reasons why some nonmainstream science could attract people and bring more or less influence to populace are due to the ignorance of relative knowledge. In ancient time, people are poor in natural knowledge so that it is hard for them to explain natural scenes, such as the reason of thunder, and how to get fire by labor. In order to acquire principles, the pursuit for astrology and psychic become a alternative approach. In addition, the astonishment of people for nature, just as the marvelous damage by the hurricane and large flood,  people are astonished so that they have to image that there may be super power which are dominate the world. And they pursue nonmainstream science to ameliorate the amazement and trepidation of mind. What is more, the pursuit for nonmainstream science is due to the natural characteristic of humanity. It is always a desire for us to know the future and fate of ourselves, even bad, we only wish to know. So the pursuit of nonmaistream science, such as fortune-telling is still satisfying the desire of many people.
However, the disadvantage of nonmainstream is obviously. If people pursue the nonmainstream knowledge to get a certain desire of ourselves, just as astrology, while ignorant the true reason and principle, it is afraid the instruction from nonmainstream information would disturb the normal life, damage the desire. For example, if a farmer would like to get a big harvest, he only believe that a super power exceeded labor forces will bring him a harvest, he only pray for the power and wait the anticipated harvest instead of taking work hard, obviously, the harvest must not come to the farmer. However, if the farmer takes proper method of irrigation and cultivation, the harvest could be waiting him in few days.
At the same time, following the development of science and the exploration to the unknown areas, the accumulation of scientific knowledge could help us to explain a large number of natural phenomenon, such as what thunder is. However, there are still some questions could be explained by present scientific knowledge and unknown field could get reasonable illumination. And in some cases, the nonmainstream science could become the mainstream science. Concerning the  example in science, proposal of the sun-center is nonmainstream in beginning and has become mainstream at present.

Thus, it is wise for us to discriminate and distinguish the true reason which are hiding the superficial surface. By analyzing and researching the unknown problem, the validated answer could be attained by scientific method rather than nonmainstream knowledge. And it is useful for us to evaluate the desire of ourselves properly so that avoiding the feigned satisfaction by pursuit for nonmainstream, such as fortune-telling.
