题目:ARGUMENT17 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper.
"Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ-which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks-has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."

In the letter, the author said that people should use EZ disposal instead of ABC waste, and listed some reasons. However, I think that there are still some aspects which are doubtful.
The author said that because EZ collects trash twice a week, and ABC collects only once a week. People should choose EZ for trash disposal. The conclusion is made too hasty. The author didn't take other factors into consideration. Why the EZ collects trash twice a week while ABC collects only one? It may because that trucks of EZ don't have enough volume to load those trashes one time. Therefore, EZ has to collect trash twice a week. Otherwise, trashes can't be fully collected. However, the ABC collects trash once a week, that's may because that its trucks are capable of collecting trashes for just one time.
The author also mentioned that the EZ has ordered additional trucks. And it means that EZ will have more trucks than ABC's. But does the number of trucks could simply stands for the capability of collecting trash? If EZ's current trucks are not capable of collecting all trashes, EZ may order additional trucks. But if EZ's newly ordered trucks will be used as reserved trucks. The EZ buy trucks and just put them in their garage, and only use them when the current trucks are overload or broke down. In that case, the number of current trucks EZ used to collect trashes from the town is not increased. It means that the capability for EZ to collect trashes has no change.
Besides that, the author claimed that EZ provides exceptional service, and 80 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with EZ. However, the author didn't mentioned the kind and the content of exceptional service. The author only said that the EZ provides exceptional service, readers don't know the service in detail. Also, since the survey was made in the last year. At that time, the town was still use EZ to collect trashes instead of ABC Waste. Local people hadn't compare the service of EZ with ABC's service. People have no other choices. Since the council decided to use ABC for trash. People could compare the services of the two companies. In that case, the result of survey may turned to an opposite one. So, the result of the survey mentioned in the letter is not convinced enough.
I think the author should take other factors in to consideration and tell the content of services provided by EZ in detail. |
